Wouldn't you know it, I just told my PA last week at my 3 month check up that I wasn't losing hair and the last couple days it's been really falling out! Any suggestions?

Make sure that you are getting your protein that your body needs and take your vitamins each day. If it still does this you can ask your Dr.
Hope this helps

Losing your hair is pretty norml after WLS.  We've just put our bodies through a traumatic event -- the surgery itself, plus dramatic decrease in calories, plus a huge mental re-set that causes stress and anxiety.  So when our body experiences trauma, one of the defense mechanisms is to reset the hair growth cycle.  It takes about 3 months for that cycle to get back in its normal groove. So what you're experiencing now is a result of what happened 3 months ago.  Mmm... you're right on time!  :-)

Hair is made of protein and hair growth and maintenance is one of protein's tasks in the body.  However, hair growth is way down on the list of priorities right now.  Some more important protein tasks include healing damaged cells (wounds), creating new red blood cells and providing energy/fuel to muscles and organs in the body (including your heart).  So obviously hair growth isn't a survival task right now so it gets put on the back burner while the body recovers from WLS.  (BTW -- hair loss can occur with any traumatic event like pregnancy, car accident, job loss/stress, etc.)

So make sure you are feeding your body enough protein.  60-80g per day at the very least.  When my hair started falling out I was taking in about 70g/day.  I bumped it up to 100g and noticed a dramatic decrease in my hair loss.  So don't skimp on protein!

Hair loss is also sometimes a result of certain vitamin deficiencies.  Zinc and some B Vitamins... etc.  So make sure you are always faithful with your multi-vitamin and other supplements.  And make sure you are getting your blood drawn to check your levels regularly.

Nothing is going to stop the hair loss once it starts.  You won't lose it all, don't worry.  And it will all grow back eventually.  Many people (me included) take Biotin.  This will help the new hair growth come back strong and healthy.

Good luck
Pam

I am currently in round 3 of hair loss since surgery 2 years ago.  The first two followed major surgery.  I can't figure this time out.  I get 100 grams of protein every day so I'm guessing that the loss is due to stress.

Like Pam said, it will not all fall out and it will grow back in.  This is just one of those small bumps in the road to healthfullness.

I started lossing mine really bad about this time also and it came in streaks where I would loss some then it started growing back then it started again. but one thing they say is get all your protein in and start taking biotin. If you are doing this then just hang on. It is just one thing that some go through... Mine was bad enough that I was looking at wigs. but it is ok now.....hang in there and we are here for you
