I will be having surgey next Monday.  I am starting my second week of my liquid diet.  I am so cranky, and angry.  I miss chewing.  I drink my protien shakes, and eat 1/2 cup of oatmeal in the evening.  I have tried the sugarfree popcicles, and sf jello...I am still hungry.  What would happen if I cheat....I had steamed vegetables last night...

You already cheated!  And with steamed veggies, no less.  That is a small victory.  You didn't go out and eat a pizza, right?

There isn't anything you can do about what you've already eaten.  What you do need to do is recognize what a hard time you're having, and what you're going to do to get you through this.  No one is going to be hurt by you going off the liquid diet but you.   So start fresh today.  Make some decisions about how you're going to live the rest of your life.  Are you going to let food make or break you?  Are you stronger than this?  If you aren't, then you shouldn't go through with surgery.

Let me just give you a bit of advice from my personal experience.  I made it through my pre-op diet by telling myself that it was the last time I would ever diet.  That I was going to be skinny and the hold that food had on me would be gone because it would be impossible for me to eat a lot or eat sugar.  Boy, was I wrong!

I am two years post op and I am hungry all the time.  I can eat sugar, and sometimes do.  I have to struggle every day to make myself stop eating because I gain weight really really quickly.  So basically, I am on a "diet" for the rest of my life.  All I do all day is think about what food I'm eating, what I have had so far, what am I going to eat later, how much have I lost and/or gained, did I do enough exercise today....and on and on.  I am much worse off mentally than I was before surgery when all I worried about was finding cute clothes in bigger sizes.

So....my point is.....you are having a mental battle with yourself.  You're not starving or dehydrated, because you can drink.  Your brain is rebelling and you have to make a decision here and now how you are going to deal with it.  Will you die if you have something to eat?  No.  Chances are, no one will ever know.  But the bigger picture is to come to terms with how you relate to food and self control.

Don't beat yourself up.  This is a great time of self-discovery.  Have faith in yourself.  Be proud that you have made it this far.  I'm not familiar with the liquid pre op diet so I can't give you suggestions on recipies, but make sure you giving yourself a variety of both hot and cold liquids.  When I was pre-op I got very sick of cold, milky drinks.

Good Luck to you.  Post all you want if you feel like you're going crazy.  We all help each other and you'll make it through a lot easier if you have some support.
