I need to know (very long)
Tammy - my DH would LOVE you! LOL He came from a dirty home - lots of kids & lots of pets, plus parents were smokers. After being married, it took me a while to figure out why the bed always had to be made, why the dishes always had to be done, why the floors always needed to be vaccuumed/swept, etc. but then I remembered the environment in which he grew up. Made sense. I've come to enjoy the cleaning now because I know it is an act of love to show him. My neighbors always comment on how my house is immaculate. I wouldn't say that, but it is always picked up and fairly clean.
Also, my DH installs DSL so he's in many homes a day and all I know is that he appreciates a clean home when he does an install. I could tell you horror stories about the junk homes he's been in but it would make your skin crawl.
So, I say you're normal!
Normal. You sound pretty much like me, and I prefer to think I'm normal.
My house isn't perfect, but I'm not at all embarassed to have people in. Could I do better? Probably - if someone came up with 27 hour days. Could I do worse? Holy Hannah, YES! I've been in houses just like you described, with pet hair wadded up along the edges of every room, bits of heaven-knows-what all over a carpet that has no discernable color, bathrooms that smell like you-know-what and look like they need to be steam-cleaned and squeegee'd. I can't help but think of one friend in particular. Yes, she has 5 kids from 20 down to 5. But she's a stay at home mom, too! I work full time, help at church, have my Girl Scout troop, and now? Support group and coffee get-togethers to take care of ME!
So is my house immaculate? Nope - no need for the red velvet rope around my living room! But nothing to be embarassed by, either. I have had a cleaning lady come in ONE DAY EACH SPRING for deep cleaning of those areas I just don't make time for - light fixtures, above my kitchen cabinets, stuff I just don't get to on a regular basis. Usually, I have her come right after tax refund time. Haven't had her this year yet, tho... (hmmm... better get on that!)
