Yummy Breakfast!

So I tried making the quinoa cereal on my own for breakfast today (at the workshop it was all prepared for us) and boy did it turn out yummy!  I made a 1/4 cup of quinoa flakes with 3/4 cup boiling water then added a tablespoon of raw almond butter and about a tablespoon of agave nectar and then a few fresh raspberries and blackberries.

Funny, but this is all foreign language to me. Never heard of quinia and agave nectar. But you liked it huh?

Quinoa is a South American grain that has 4 grams of protien in 1/4 cup.  When you cook the flakes it makes a hot ceral kind of like malt-o-meal and is really pretty tasty.  I have found it at several of the local co-ops and Whole Foods.  Agave nectar is a natural sweetner it is lighter than honey, but works just as well if not better in my opinion.

I've heard of agave nectar but not quinoa flakes.  Do you get them at a health food store?  Are the flakes like oatmeal?  What do they taste like?

You should be able to find quinoa flakes at any natural food store so most of the local co-ops or Whole Foods.  Most of the stores will carry them in the bulk food section or you can buy them in a box (I got mine from the bulk food section).  It tastes like a cross between oatmeal and malt-o-meal, but since I mix in almond butter it tastes more like the almond butter than anything.  The flakes actually look kind of like instant potato flakes, but a little smaller.  Quinoa is from South America and there are 4 grams of protien in a 1/4 cup.

There is a natural food place in Burnsville I will have to see if they have it.  I am always willing to try something new that is WLS friendly.  Thanks!

You can also use it in place of rice. I have used it a couple of times and really like it too.

I actually used the quinoa grains in place of cous cous to make a salad with chicken, cucumbers, carrots, celery, parsley and the juice from one lemon it is really good!  I hadn't thought about it, but you are right it would work well to replace rice in stir fry or a mexican type dish....thanks for the idea!

Nicole, In my Womens Day magazine they have this Quinoa listed as one of the top 10 perfect foods...... It also gives idea's like:  *Put cooked quinoa into a salad or Tuna salad. *Eat it at any meal that would normally include rice, drizzle a little teriyaki or soy sauce onto it for extra flavor.                               * Steam it, mix with fresh basil or thyme, and top with your favorite stew. Just thought I'd share this with you. Kelly
