Just curious to hear if anyone here has tried Overeaters Anonymous. I used to do it and am considering going back...maybe... If you are doing it now... have you told them about your surgery? Elena

I tried it pre-op and one lady there had WLS but continued to attend.  I know people who have gone back to WW post-op too.

It sure SOUNDS like a long road - but if you remove the 40+ pounds you've already dropped?  You have @ 110 to go.  Getting all the support you can is great!  But methinks you'll be pleased by the progress you're going to continue to make!  I'm certain of it, you have a good head on your shoulders. I did OH half my life ago.  I found I'm really not the 12-step type.  I don't know why, it just felt hokey to me.  I didn't have NEAR the issues a lot of the people I met with had, so I never really felt like I fit in.  I just liked FOOD, dammit!  I haven't been abused or neglected, haven't resorted to doing horrible things to feed my addiction, I just ate too much of the wrong things.  So try as I might, some of those 12 steps just really didn't strike me as being applicable.  But it DID bring me some peace of mind to know I wasn't alone in my obesity, ya know?  I think we spend so much time thinking "I am the most ginormous human being ANYWHERE!" that we don't always notice all the others around us who are suffering the extra weight as well. Anyway, I'm a load of help, aren't I???   LOL....

I totally understand the "long road".  I started out needing to lose 250 pounds.  It was quite intimidating.  But now that I've lost 120+ pounds, it doesn't seem so bad.  I've lost my way recently, but am slowing getting back on track.  I gotta keep remembering I didn't put the weight on in a year, so I can't expect to lose it in a year.  But you are doing absolutely great!  Keep up the good work.

I am an OA member of about 8+ weeks.  I lost all my weight within 8 months, and haven't regained at all.  But, the compulsion with food came back with a vengeance and I was concerned that I would start the unhealthy habits again.  Plus, I just didn't want to be consumed with thoughts of food, even if I'm not eating all the time!  I went to an OA-HOW meeting originally, but didn't need that much structure since I'm already physically restricted,.  However, the success in that part of the program was extremely impressive.  I'm in traditional OA. I am a firm believer in the 12 steps - it's been a slightly difficult journey because of the emotional stuff associated with the 12 steps, but I know it's a great journey for me so far.   It has been great for me, and I would tell anyone to give it a try.  Good luck to you, and feel free to get in contact with me if you'd like to chat about it.   Renee

I tried OA-HOW a year ago before I started 9on this journey in one of my last attempts.  I didn't like the rigidity and the people there thought rather highly of themselves.  I am not sure how a regular OA group would be though.  Let us know if you decide to try it!
