I had a lap RMY 3 weeks ago today.  I returned to work (I workat an elementary school as an admin) yesterday.  I would suggest that you plan on being off at least until your first dr. appt, just to be sure your healing is going on the right track.  It was nice to have the total of 3 weeks off to rest and get some strength back before having the stress of work.  As for telling your boss and co-workers- it is your choice, but I agree that the majority of emplyers will be more accomodating if they know what is happening.  In the 2 days that I have been back, people have been treating me fabulously!Good Luck- this is a journey worth taking!

i took 6 weeks - but could have gone back after 2 - had the sick time so I used it.

I don't know if part-time employment qualifies for the Family Medical Leave Act - but that would be one reason to let your employer know  -- if you are out for illness they can't fire you. or if something comes up - then you are covered with a doctors note.  they can be vague in the description.  I think my note said abdominal surgery.

Best wishes!

I guess I am going to be the odd one to post.  I had my surgery on a Thurs morning.......was out of the hospital by noon on Friday.  I went back to work on Tues morning.  Yeah I was a little tired but really did just fine.  At the time I was also a single mom so a very active 5 yr old.  I have a desk job with no lifting.  You never know though how YOU will do.  I personally tend to bounce back pretty quickly probably quicker than I should.   I just hate to be dependant on people.  Good luck to you!

Hello!
I have a desk job and I planned on 2 weeks ****il my 1st post op appt). The 1st 2 weeks I felt weak and tired A LOT. I felt as if my body was starving to death. But as soon as I could start with protein, I started feeling better every day and I went back to work after 3 weeks total. It will be totally up to you & your situation. If my husband had had his way, I would have stayed home for 6 weeks!

Thanks for all the feedback, girls! Being home will almost be more work than work with a what will be around surgery time a 1 yr old. Aside from mental stress, my job is cake. I guess we'll just have to wait and see. I'm not sure about FLMA since I'm part time and was out so long with bed-rest and maternity leave already within the last year.

I work fulltime and so I did tell my employeer but ended taking the full 6 weeks. I have FMLA plus my short term so I douple dipped while I was out, My surgery was Open RNY but if your going to have lap then you might not need as much time.

Kristy, I did tell my boss about why I was having sugery. I also told my assistant manager but did not tell my employees. Really my intention was only to tell those that truly needed to know.

I have been with the same company for almost 9 years now and never took more than 2-3 days off at one time. So I knew that if I was to take a week or more off people would take. I ended up taking 2 weeks off mostly just nerves that keeped me from taking more. As a manager I just have a hard time being gone for a long period of time. I do wish that I would have taken more time just so that I could adjust to the different stages of food. I also was tired a lot and although I sit mainly in my office or in meeting I did feel that my mind just was not there.

Wish you all the best as you make this decision.

God Bless, Angela
