First therapist visit

Last night I had my first appointment with my new therapist who works mostly with Bariatric patients and came reccomended by the staff at PNC.  The 50 minutes seemed to fly by and I only got a little about my past mental health issues out, but we mostly focused on what is going on with my eating right now.  She wants to really look at my relationship with my family and how that is connected to my eating issues, since when I am there I feel like I have to sneak the "bad foods" when no one is around and then of course I eat more than I should.  She also gave some goals to work on during the next week including no simple carbs, eating all of my protien first, getting in 20 minutes of exercise everyday (more if I want to), being mindful of portion sizes, having a healthy protien rich snack if more than 4 - 5 hours between meals, and setting an intention each day.  I went grocery shopping last night and picked up some good protiens (chicken, meatballs, Boca Chili, gardenburgers, and tuna) I was very proud of myself for avoiding any and all cookies or chips (even the baked or SF ones) and got some fruits and veggies, water, CL and that was it!  I am hoping that between seeing her and the nutritionist on a more frequent basis that I will be able to kick my weightloss back into gear.

So glad to hear that your first meeting went well.  Sounds like you are on track, now keep it up!  I'm sure that she would be helpful between sessions if you need some additional help/encouragement. If not, I know that WE would be willing to encourage your (or give you a kick in the pants, if you wanted).

It is so great to see that you really want to be successful (which I think you have been, so far).

I hear you about the family/sneaking foods/etc.  That is one of my problems as well...and I am struggling with that...I really need to educate my mother, however.  She is so unpredictable with what she does for me.  She encourages me to eat well, and if I go for something that is a little higher in sugars or carbs, she asks me if I should be eating that, but then turns around and asks 3 or 4 times if I would like some dessert after the meal.  WTH???? Crazy.

Best of luck with the therapist!  I know you will do well!

Thank you Laurie!  I know that I need to come here more than I have been lately to get the support I need or instead of heading to fridge!  I know that part of the reason I sneak food around my family is that I don't want them to know I might be eating foods that aren't good for me because I don't want to dissappoint them.  At least at my sisters this weekend the cookies I ate were SF so they were as bad as they could have been.  Yes, I am bound and determined to make my life healthy and to overcome the disordered eating.  One thing my therapist said that was comforting was that most people tend to have problems (return of disordered eating habits) around the same time I did so that helps.  I will share any pearls of wisdom I get from therapy with the board, especially on the secret eating because I know from 19 years of doing it that it is one of the hardest things to break.

It sounds like you and the therapist set some good goals and are off to a productive start.

Your grocery items sound very healthy as well.  Do you like the Boca Chili and gardenburgers?  I've been thinking about trying soy protein but am VERY nervous about it.  I'm such a picky eater.

Jen~Thank you!  Yes I really do enjoy the soy protien I just found out last night though to read the label carefully as some have more carbs than protien.  I think alot of people who do not like them because when they eat something like meat they want the meaty taste.  I am open to all sorts of new foods and for a while I was an on agian/off again vegetarian.

Congrats on buying some health food--and avoiding snacks altogether!

Ain't it something how we have such a 'love-hate' relationship with food--and family.

Your counselor must've gone to the same school mine did--offered much the same advice and 'therapy'.  I find I really have to work to keep it in mind--which means, I guess, that mindful eating  has not become first nature. For something to become a habit it has to be done for a month straight--(at least that's what I've heard.)

Nicole, you're doing a great job!

Sue~Thank you!  That is funny that our therapists seem to be in the same mindset, maybe that is a sign that it's the right way to go!  I know that mindfulness and eating something I need to work on especially in the evenings and on weekends.  Keep up the good work on being mindful and it will be a habit in no time!  Well, gotta run to work!  Love & Hugs!  Nicole
