I got a date with my surgeon
Congratulations Jan! I, too, wondered if it was a personal date with your surgeon! Anyway, I agree with waiting to see what your program allows during the first phase post-surgery. However, I'd used a lot of spice powder flavorings (i.e., poultry seasoning, Italian seasoning, garlic and onion powders.) Also, I'd added extract flavorings to s/f Vanilla CIB--raspberry, French vanilla, lemon, almond, peppermint....you'll definitely want to allow yourself flavor varieties to prevent 'same 'ol, same 'ol' boredom! Best wishes, and looking forward to you joining us on the loser's bench! Hugs, Patti

You crack me up! Humor will be your saving grace as you proceed! CIB is Carnation Instant Breakfast, though I may not have noted get the blue box, sugarfree. Lately, if I need additional protein, I have EAS unflavored protein powder which I add to s/f hot chocolate. I've always liked and still always have on hand either the EAS four-packs, or the Atkins AdvantEdge four-packs ready-to-drink protein shakes. They're only available in chocolate or vanilla, (one comes in artificial strawberry, though I add fresh strawberries and vanilla to smooth out the flavor.) and neither is bad at all. Just remember, you can't expect them to taste like a DQ shake or malt, though your imagination will get a work-out as you learn to adjust your 'tastes' to what choices will be available to you. Also, post-surgery, sometimes people will have an aversion to dairy milk, although I'd stocked up on soy milk, and hadn't even tried regular milk for six months. Different brands of soy milk taste entirely different, depending on the brands. My fave was Slender Soy, and did not like Soy Silk. I did appreciate Cub Foods brand soy milk, especially having added extract flavorings. For the full liquids/pureed phases, I'd enjoyed Gerber 1st and 2nd phase baby foods--only fruits and veggies, not the meats (ugh!) Add apple spice powder (or cinnamon/nutmeg) to the apple sauce. Also used the baby cereal, to which I again added extract flavorings--especially adding a teeny bit of vanilla to the fruit flavor, and added almond extract and nutmeg to the banana flavor. More ideas to work with--breathe, breathe, breathe as you begin the most amazing journey ever! Looking forward to have you on the bench--being just over two years out, have shrank from size 22W to size sixes...the WOWs certainly last longer than that 'honeymoon phase'--just follow your prescribed program the very best you can, get in your required water (more is better), get ANY exercise as often as you're able along the way, and your results will amaze you! Don't forget to take pre-surgery measurements, then pick the same day monthly (mine's the first), because there will be times the weight loss won't show on the scale, though the measurements scream your progress! Remember: ankles, calves, mid thighs, hips, waist, beneath the bust, bust, upper arms, wrists, neck. Sounds like a lot of measuring, though as you shrink, you'll enjoy seeing all the numbers going down! Am so excited for you! All the best.....Patti

Wow, thank you Patti! See, I must not have an imagination because I sure am getting some ideas off of this board. I tried Soy Milk for the first time yesterday and did not care for it all. I am a farm gal and I beleive in supporting the farmers so gotta drink that milk. I love skim milk, so I think I am gona try and stick to that. I have read so much on taste buds changing and I gotta have my milk.
Size 6 huh? I have not seen that for 40 years. I could not even imagine that size.
I am a size 24 now and I'd be happy in a size 16. My Dr told me at my age (59) not to expect a big weight loss as the older we get, our metabolism slows down. I sure hope he is wrong. If I go through this and don't see at least a size 16 I think I will be depressed AGAIN.
Thanks for the encouragement Patti- See ya on the 'bench'. Jan

JAN
Hey Jan, I can't believe it: "My Dr told me at my age (59) not to expect a big weight loss as the older we get, our metabolism slows down." I had RNY at just over 50, and now, four months from 53, am still shrinking to smaller sizes. I challenge you to AMAZE your surgeon and show that it's more than possible to do very well at your age. You'll be repeatedly reminded post-surgery to sip, sip, sip (water) and walk, walk, walk. Another two cents: check out the OFF (Over Fifty Forum), and it's another totally friendly support board, and there ARE gals who've had WLS even over age 60. Just a thought! Hugs, Patti (who also grew up on a dairy farm -- older brother and wife moved to the cities eleven years ago got jobs here, though he kept one of the farms and part-time raises soybeans--so I'm a dairy AND soy gal!)
