Dr. Buchwald

I had Dr. Buchwald for my DS and LOVED HIM!  He's so funny and sincere....not a bad thing to say about him at all!

He's an excellent experienced surgeon and you are going to a pioneer and leader in the DS field!

I had no complications post-op and the hospital stay was wonderful.  The nursing staff and aides were all exceptional and excellent caregivers!

Overall a great experience and not one regret!

Ditto what Peach said!  I actually only have 'half a DS', due to previous WLS(s), I couldn't get the restrictive portion of the surgery.  But I'm down almost 140 pounds in just under 12 months.  Just realize you'll need to come here to OH, and the DS forum for the real post-op vitamin and nutrition info . . . .like many surgeons, his staff/aftercare info is clueless about how we REALLY make it work :-)  They live under the impression that we have the same needs as an RnY post-op.  But, realizing that, he's a super surgeon, and an all and all nice guy.

His general hospital stay is 5 days, I think.  I was there for 7 because of issues from previous surgeries and their scar tissue . . . but no complications what-so-ever!

ETA:  He has been known to allow out-of-state people to return home directly from the hospital.  He may hold you an extra day, maybe 2, but doesn't necessarily require you to stay local for 2 weeks, like some docs do.  You may like that, or you may not feel comfortable with it, but just thought I'd mention it!

thanks peach for your post.......i have heard only wonderful things from my research but it's great to hear it first hand from his patients.....i began this journey with a consultation for RNY in Michigan but since then i've descovered ds and am convinced it's the way to go......so now my doctor has resubmitted to my insurance for the ds........i live in fort frances, ontario which is on the border with international falls, MN......so getting approval from OHIP.....ontario health insurance plan.......is sometimes like pulling teeth........my family doc says shes confident this will happen.....but it's the waiting that's the hardest........so glad i found this site.....it's amazing and i learn so much every day..........thanks again.

Hi ,   Just had to jump in here and add a comment. My mom had Dr. Buchwald do her surgery(one they no longer do 34years ago.)  And she is still alive and kicking.  My niece had another surgery in the cities and had Dr. Ikkrumadin I probably spelled that wrong but, my mom also went and Dr Buchwald took time out to go talk to my mom after all those years.  I'm having the RNY in 19 days.   And by the way I live in International FAlls...... Maybe you could do the support group over here or something....
