Bone Density after WLS

I just had a bone density test after my first one three years ago; which was right before my RNY revision.  It showed a significant decrease in bone density, and I am wondering if anyone else has had this happen.  I am wondering if it could related to malabsorbtion (sp?) after surgery?  I do take 3 calcium citrate with D spaced throughout the day.  Anyone out there on supplement or a precribed osteoporsis med such as Actonel, Boniva or Evista?  I just finished blood tests and a  24 - hour urine collection to see if I am losing calcium rather than absorbing it.

Are all of your labs ok? Did you get your Vitamin D tested? If you're not absorbing D, then you're not absorbing Calcium. They had to put me on prescription Vit D for 8 weeks to see if that gets up my levels.

Good luck Cheryl!

Yes, doing tests and I think the Vit D will be thing to try....but will let the dr decide.  Yeah, like I am meek and mild - ha, ha!  Otherwise, doing well.  Just did my first 5K on Saturday.  Some running, but mostly power walking (my son calls it a wog).  I never would have done this in my pre-surgical life.

That's wonderful! There's no way in heck that I could do a 5K. I barely walk.

Let us know how your labs end up!

Hi Cheryl

Sorry to hear you're having bone issues. I am having the same problems. I have osteopenia....this is the stage just before osteoperosis. I take 3 calcium and vitamin D a day. I had my vitamin D levels checked and it's okay. My  T score on one of my hips is -1.8   If it gets to
-2.0 then my doc will put me on actonel. My last bone density was the same, at -1.8 so hopefully I'm getting it under control.

Good luck.

Hi Peggy,

Thanks for the response and an added bonus to hear from you!  My D and Calcium were okay at my post op check in September (a month ago) .  Yeah, I, too have osteopenia, about the same degree as you -2.0.  I remember you talking about the effects of caffiene and I do love my coffee!  Catch me up on you, shere you are, Ken and the girls!

Just how do they do this bone density test(besides blood work)? How are they able to tell you about your hips etc being at a level?
