Sugar Free V non Sugar Free
My question is this... with the carnation instant drink I didn't do Sugar Free for the liquid diet. The book said I could do either so I tried them both and I found that I liked the taste and textrure of the non sugar free in more milk. so that it was more like drinking lightly flavored milk rather then this chalky drink. also I didn't drink the recomended 5 to 6 a day because I had the non sugar free and the more milk. I am hoping this is okay and will also be okay after surgery. Granted sugar free V non sugar free will have to see how the little guy can handle it.
Also on the last day.. the umm icky drink this stuff and spend 12 hours in the bathroom day how does one not go insane? I have done well with the instant drinks me and my coworkers joked that I was having Milkshakes for lunch while they were stuck with pizza and burgers. Oddly it helped me and I made it through just fine. I'm just worried about monday and not even getting the drinks.. Also I can't drink anything after midnight but my surgery is at 12:30.. I'm gonna have cotten mouth from you know where. Any advice here?
Oh and the one thing I have missed the most... chewing.. I miss it a lot so I bought myself a huge thing of gum and have chewed my little heart out, okay I think thats about all.
Hi -
Here's a couple thoughts. Be careful of the sugar version of the Carnation after surgery. i'm not sure how many grams of sugar it has, but you may not be able to handle it. You don't want to be dumping the first week post-op. Dumping at 5 years post-op is no fun, but it would be worse when you're still recovering.
Nex****ch the gum post-op. Some programs don't allow it because if you accidently swallow it, you may need "Rotor Rooter" to get rid of the plug!
The lovely bowel prep shouldn't last 12 hours, although keep the baby wipes or wet adult butt wipes around. Regular toilet paper will feel like sandpaper after awhile! The "ass reaper" earns it's name for a reason!
Congrats and good luck - keep us updated on your progress!

The bowel prep isn't as bad as some make it out to be. I didn't find myself in the bathroom for 12 hours. Because I had been on a liquid diet beforehand, there wasn't much to get rid of. You know, it is what it is. I bought stuff from Target which had a lemon taste. I put it in the fridge and drank it with a lot of water. Took about a good 1/2 hour to drink it. I don't think it was all that bad. Certainly not the worst thing pre or post op. Think about how much weight you'll drop just getting rid of all the "crap" in your system. Always look on the bright side. And don't go anywhere. The sudden urge just means you need to use the rest room a little more often.
You will want to get used to the taste of the sugar free stuff pretty quickly. If the texture isn't right, then try diluting it a bit more or try something else. The last thing you will want to do is dump right after surgery. You will go through sugar withdrawl. You will be irritable, shaky, and feel like crap. But if you plan it right, perhaps you can withdraw from sugar while on pain meds. Might not make it as bad. You'll acquire a taste for sugar free items pretty quickly. I never thought I would. And I did. Sf is key to working the tool correctly.
Instead of gum, perhaps try tic tacs. They are small and disolve rather quickly. It will get rid of the awful taste in your mouth. Won't allow you to chew, but it will get rid of the taste of metal that may occur after surgery. That, to be honest, was the worst for me. At least if you swallow a tic tac, it won't stretch your pouch or hurt when it passes through the stoma. If chewing is an issue, try chewing on ice. Ok, probably not the best idea. But it worked for me. Bad for teeth, perhaps. Again, crushed ice worked best for me.
Best of luck. Remember to sip and walk! Best of luck to you. You'll do just fine!
