I am really craving a diet soda.  It has been only about 7 weeks since I had my surgery and I was wondering if I could have a couple sips or will this hurt anything?

You are going to get every answer in the book on that one.  I would say ask your NUT.  If its only the flavor and caffienne you want, you can kill the carbonation(which is the central controversy) by leaving the soda open in your fridge for several hours, or if you have a bottle, shake it, let the air out slowly, and repeat until it's flat.  Cans can be flattend by banging it on a hard surface after you open it.

For the record, my NUT says no probs, but that is not common amongst the tribe...so I'm told.

What I am really craving is the taste of it, I could careless about the carbonation.  I will try your tricks for getting the carbonation out.

Call your NUT and ask what their guidelines are. Your pouch is so NEW!
Paul gives you great instructions on how to get rid of the fizz, so if they're cool with it and agree, enjoy.

Remember that carbonation is only one of the issues with soda. There is also the caffeine issue due to the fact it is a diuaretic, so if you drink caffeine this early out, make sure you are drinking extra water to replace what you are loosing. Also, there have been studies that even diet soda acts as an appetite stimulant. However, if you do this as anything else post op, in moderation, AND the nut says it's ok, then yay you! Otherwise, one little sip, swished around and spit out or even swallowed just to get the taste, is not going to hurt you.

You already know the answer.  Don't even get me going on this one!!!!  Funny how this caused issues about a year ago with another newer surgery patient.
And yes, I am still a Proud Little Soldier.....so ------>

I said a year ago ---- and some found it harsh (even though it is true) --- If you can find it in the little book you received from your nutritionist with guidelines from the doctor, let me know which page it is cause I must have missed it.  Since I've got the same surgeon, I know it's not in the book -- Nurse Barb J will give you the ultimate answer -- give her a call.

We all have to give things up (the lifestyle change part) and this is one of them.  I used to drink 2-3 of the big liter bottles of diet pepsi a DAY.  Haven't had one sip since June, 2007.  Just know I can't have it so I find other things to drink that are okay'd.  You'll crave other things as the process continues but you have to change your mindset and work with your tool.

Many will tell you they haven't had any issues with drinking it so go ahead -- and you certainly can.  We all have to make choices for ourselves so ultimately the choice is yours.  But is this a slippery slide you want to start on?  Make healthy choices and work with your tool for the best success.
