Does anyone drink pop??  Or at least tried??  I heard you get bubbles in your chest.  And what about drinking out of a straw????

Being a hard-core pepsi drinker, abt 8 cans a day pre-surgery. I gave it up completely 2 weeks before surgery.  I have tried pop a couple times in the last 3 years and it just is not worth it to me. I can't stand the fuzzy way my tummy feels after drinking it.

I do know there are some that indulge and others that do not. I think it is a personal preference. Letting the pop sit open and the fizzies leak off seems to work for some people.

I drink out of a straw every single day, my water, ice tea both.

Good luck,

Karen

I drink the occasional diet pop, and it makes me very burpy.  Not too enjoyable--that's why it's few and far between.

I think the whole point of having this surgery was to give up the bad habits we had.  Things like soda, and candy and over eatting are what got us to the place we were before the surgery.  I say its time to find new things that are good for you and to stop thinking about all the things you can't have anymore.  Focus on all the new things you can have.

I keep telling myself I wanted this, no one forced.  By slipping back to my old habits I'm just wasting my time and money.
Just a day at a time...  thats all you can do.

You are way to soon out of surgery to think about pop.....yes, there are people who drink it-I have an ongoing battle with diet mtn dew-I love the stuff even though it makes my tummy hurt, and it is my addiction.  I limit myself though, because I actually got to a point where I was tanking a couple or three 2 liter bottles a day-and that was BAD.  I almost gave myself an ulcer, and I gained weight.  Pop makes your pouch stretch-so you will eat more.  If you eat and drink at the same time, not only can that be painful, but you will wash everything through.  My advice is to leave well enough alone and don't go to the dark side.

as for straws-I use them all the time now.  I think I waited about 4-6 months before using them.  I believe that the concern is that you will swallow air with them and it will make you very uncomfortable.  I never had a problem with them, but I never had a problem with drinking my liquids either-I was gulping glassfulls from the begining, never had to sip.

thats my two cents.  remember this tool will help you, but it won't prevent you from making bad choices so you need to be careful-and different programs will tell you different things about the liquids.

good luck!!

I was about 18 months out before I had my first root beer, and although it didn't give me gas, I decided it wasn't something I wanted to start up again.  Soda has NO redeeming qualities and as Lynn said, it can stretch your pouch.

I remember at the PNC information meeting, the nurse said the quickest way to sabotage yourself is to drink pop, especially with  meals.

So, don't start - then you won't have to worry about stopping!

I might get crucified here - but yes, I drink diet coke daily.  I didn't drink any until at least 7-9 months post-op.  I always pour it in a glass to de-fizz it some...and yes, I admit I'm addicted to the caffeine.  If you can live without it - go for it.  It's easier on your teeth not drinking pop, and I'm sure there are lots of reasons not to drink it.  Do I recommend it?  Probably not, I'm just posting to say I don't believe my pouch is going to explode or stretch because of it.   I do enough burping when I drink it, and your stomach has openings on both ends...so I don't believe the balloon trick that some talk about.  Of course I can eat more than someone who is newly post-op, but yesterday I had a one egg omelette with cheese for lunch and I was full.  That tells me I don't have a pouch the size of a football.

Life after WLS is full of choices...and I respect everyone's choices.  I'm just saying out loud that I don't think I'm going to WLS hell because of a glass of bubbly caffeine.  I've given up alot of my vices and if this is the worst one I have left...I'm ok with that.

I tried it after about 1yr post op.  It hurt.  So then, I tried it de~fizzed and bleck!  Just didn't taste like it use to so I don't drink it anymore.  If I crave different flavor I do the G2, Propel, tea, ect.
Drinking thru a straw caused me to burp alot so I don't do that either.
Just my personally experiences!
