Lifting restrictions ?

I posted this question on the RNY board, but didn't get many replies. I know I can count on you guys to share what your surgeon told you.  What were your restrictions on lifting? What amount of weight and for how long?  I can't find this in any of my litterature from the surgeon.

I'm getting nervous about not being able to pick up Lauren. She's 20lbs and I'll have 24/7 help with her for two weeks after surgery.  Either husband or family will be with me or have her at their house.  I'm hoping it'll be ok to lift her after 2 weeks,  if I try to limit it a little.

I didn't have any lifting restrictions.  My son weighs 30 pounds, and my surgeon told me to go ahead, that I would have no problems.  I only had help after my surgery for two days, and was pretty much fine.  Don't worry!

I guess if you have an open RNY as opposed to a lap RNY might be the deciding factor in lifting up your sweet litle daughter.  I would recommend that you ask your doctor this question. But even so--after 2 weeks you should be okay.

Getting close?!

My Hubby had asked the surgeon and he said I would be fine after a week. I have 1 and 2 year old so I needed to know. Ask them but maybe wait until you have too as well.

If I recall Kristy there was a bit of a restriction on lifting. I think it was limited though. Feel free to ask before you leave the hospital they will tell you! Or you could just give them a call. I would think you should be fine after 2 weeks. I'm so excited for you, your day is almost here!!!

Yeah!!!  Less than two weeks!  I am so happy for you!  Lifting restrictions.....10 lbs for the two weeks, 20 lbs for the next two and then none.  That was from Fairview SD weight loss.  I think that you will be able to lift her after your first week if you are careful.  I would worry about her squirming on your belly though.  Your body will tell you what is too much.  How are you feeling?  Haven't heard from you in a bit.

Micheal was right on the lifting restrictions.  I would practice having her climb into your lap now.  Also, practice proper lifting (ones moms forget when they are in a hurry to grab a child).  I had a complete hysterectomy when my youngest was 10 months and we had a month to prepare so I decided it was time to teach her the toddler bed.  She had that down by surgery time.  BUT I forgot about the high chair routine and 2 weeks out when all my help was gone I lifted her and MAN did THAT hurt.  JUST BE CAREFUL.  It'll go good!!!!

WOOOOOHOOOOOOOOO!!!!  You are SOOOO close

Kristy,

Ask your Doctor as they are all different........

I believe my Doctor said no lifting nothing for 2 weeks, that included my laundry, no vacuming, etc......Then after the 2 weeks I could lift 10 pounds......Then after that 20 pounds......Then at 6 weeks I could lift whatever and workout......He dodn't want me to get a Hernia from lifting to soon.......

Kristy,

I agree that it is always best to double check w/your surgeon because each one is different and each person is different as well.  I would have to agree w/Michael in the concern more about her squirming around and accidentally hitting a sore spot.   I know that when I had my surger my youngest nephew was only 4 months, but I had issues holding him too much because he was a little wiggle worm and was always seeming to hit the sore spots.  Hopefully Lauren will be able to sit next to Mommy instead on her lap all of the time!

Only 8 more days!   I am so excited for you I know it will all go well!

Hugs!
Nicole
