.....to insurance.  I am so anxious to hear back. I am not expecting to hear anything for a couple of weeks, but wow I'm almost there. I have my teaching appt next week and as soon as I get approval I will have my appt with the surgeon.

What exciting news.  What insurance do you have? My approval through BCBS which I thought I'd heard was one of the longer ones to get approved came back within 8 days.  Best of luck, I'm happy for you!

Thanks everyone, I know Im soo excited. I have BCBS of Nebraska (my husbands employer is based in NE). Here is what the policy says.

POLICY:
The following surgical procedures are scientifically valid in the treatment of morbid obesity:
* Roux en Y Gastric bypass
* Gastric stapling
* Biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch
* Laparoscopic or open gastric banding (e.g., Lap-Band)
* Loop gastric bypass
Laparoscopic methods to perform the above procedures are scientifically validated.
All other surgical procedures, including biliopancreatic diversion without duodenal switch, are investigative.

POLICY GUIDELINES:
The screening criteria listed below should be utilized before any surgery would be considered medically necessary:

MEDICAL POLICY MANUAL
1. The patient must have morbid obesity (BMI of >/= 40 kg/meter squared) or a BMI of 35- 40 kg/meter squared plus significant comorbidity.
2. The duration of obesity must have exceeded five years.
3. No identified treatable medical cause (i.e., endocrinologic).

The only one that worries me is 3. I was in the Endo on Monday because of elevated insulin levels and now am on metformin for insulin resistance and have had my thyroid dose changed for the 3rd time in 2 months because they cannot get it down to an acceptable level. Went from .05 levelthyroxin to .125 synthroid. Apparently the generic stuff doesn't work as well for me.

3. No identified treatable medical cause (i.e., endocrinologic).
