OT: Update on MIL!
Ok, this may turn into a long post but here goes. Since October pretty much, my MIL has been in and out and in again to the hospital. The middle of November the Drs (3 different ones) all gave her pretty grimm picture of her final days. My husband and his 6 other brothers were told by the Drs to start making arrangements that she will not last the week out.
Well, she was moved to the nursing home and Hospice was called in and she has slowly been improving although her hemoglobin is still at 6.?? her appetite has improved and she is gaining more and more steadiness on her feet with her walker of course. She still will not 'join' the rest of the community for dinner and her breathing is still very labored but she is not retaining fluid as bad as she was before.
So today the Dr was in and pretty much told my husband that he is very very sorry for his mistake. He walked in to see her and was shocked that she looked so good. He said he and his collegues were not anticpating that she had that much fight in her and that is what has kept her going! She has so much wrong, but has been in denial all along. One minute she says something like she is tired and wants to just be done then the next thing she is planning what color bath towels she is going to buy when she goes home! She is so sharp and a memory that goes back 86 years! I love to sit and listen to her stories of when she was a small girl growing up on the farm in Osseo, Wi!
Now the prognosis is that if she continues to improve that in 5-6 weeks she may be able to go back to her own apartment!
Now of course we still do not know much more about the cancer. They are certain that she has lung cancer, although she will not allow them to biopsy to determine. The Drs are just not going to address it right now, I guess until it starts to be a problem for her, like pain wise. She does still have the blood poisening from the faulty heart valve, but once again because of her age and other conditions she only would have a chance of about 5% of survival. So, we are going to keep her on all her meds and keep her comfy and pretty much let her do what she can. She has always called all the shots and I guess she is now more than anything!!!
This woman is such an inspiration to me and I love her with all my heart! I really feel that God has given us all such a wonderful gift right now, I have tears running down my face.
Thanks for listening

Oh hon, that is SUCH encouraging news! I do know how you feel, having been through similar stuff with my own dad. Makes a person believe in miracles, in God, in the humanity of doctors...
May God continue to bless your MIL and your whole family - looks like you may just have a happy Christmas holiday afterall!!

I'm not perfect but I am going to die trying!!!
Aww, Carol, thanks for sharing about your amazing MIL!!
The very courage and strength of character of the elderly are reasons why I chose to major in Gerontology. Most folks are go-getters--they choose to live life on their terms when at all possible.
Yup--keep her on her medications, keep her comfortable, and let her call the shots. And of course, cherish the time you have with her. She sounds like an absolutely wonderful lady!
