I recently put this question out there and.....

I asked the question " Is weight gain a given "  years after WLS.

I personally dont believe it is and got some great feedback from this thread.
Bounce back after losing is a myth ..... you eat few calories to lose and when you get to your goal ... you add some then maintain.
It annoys me when people tell others that bounce back is normal.  It doesnt have to be.

I appreciate the more direct talk and dont like to candy coat things too much.
So if anyone is interested here is the link

I am with you my friend!  I too don't believe the bounce back is the way it WILL be.  I too believe it's all in our hands.  I also see that the first year is sooooooo important in establishing the good eating habits.

WELL SAID!!  HUGS!

LA,

Thanks for the info......I believe good structure through your first year is key, with eating the right foods and exercise......

On a side note, My Bariatric nurse did tell me that they see people gain 10% of there weight back........So that is one reason why I'd like to loose 10 more pounds.......

Lindanne, great question and thanks for sharing. I agreed alot with what Jenny R had to say. Certainly things to think about being pre-op and post-op.

I agree - we don't have to gain weight!  We have this great tool, and if we use it properly, we can maintain and even continue to lose.  It bothers me when people say gain is inevitable, because it's usually not - unless we allow it.  I know a woman who had the surgery and never even got close to her goal, and said that her nurse said her gain was normal!  I think that's so damaging, because it can give people people the go-ahead to gain.

That said, I think it's easy to go too far the other way as well.  I really don't like to think of people going overboard with food restrictions or weighing themselves too often, but if we stick to the rules, we'll do ok for the most part.

Hey Linda Anne, I totally agree with all you've said.  At 2 yrs 11 months out, cannot believe I still forget to eat, and now wearing size four, even with the post-PS lymph-edema.  My two cents:  da' nile ain't just a river in Egypt!  Happy New Year to you and everyone--may 2009 bear blessings and pleasant surprises for all!  Hugs, Patti

LA - I think it's a very thought provoking post and I've followed Jenny R. enough to know she speaks from experience. She used to be a huge contributor to the RNY forum board on a daily basis and she's gone through a lot on her personal journey.

I also agree with Renee, above, that I find that is kind of setting people up for failure when nurses or bariatric staff say the 10% rebound is almost inevitable. While the studies may accurately show that is the majority of the cases, it doesn't need to be true for you. If you don't want to be part of the statistic, then keep your eyes on maintenance. But I just do not settle for loser mentality - I am a little stricter with myself than that.

Ya, I might be new to the bench, but I just know myself and I know I wouldn't be okay with anyone telling me to expect to gain - be mindful of it, yes - but not to expect it. It just makes it "acceptable" and I don't believe in that. Now, if someone wants to and use it as an excuse, then fine - we can't change their mind about it. But it's not what I signed up for when I agreed to a 6-in*****ision on my stomach!
