Water retention Post-Op

I'm 4 days post-op and have been home 2 days now. But I still feel like I ate a basketball! I've gained 10 lbs over my pre-op weight and I'm bloated all over. Everything else is OK - no other complications. I'm following the liquid diet as directed and getting most of the fluids I'm supposed to get between meals.

Did anyone have this issue and how does it get worked out? I called my doctor today and ended up talking to another physician in the practice and she said sometimes it "takes a while." Looking for other support on this.

Thanks,

Hey buddy,

I am glad to hear that your doing better. I am feeling the same way, but  it is starting to go down, get up and walk and drink ur H2O and it will get better, plus you prolly have a lot of gas too. I know I do. Keep up the great work and stay off the scale. Just TRY and enjoy the ride right now.

Talk to you soon,
D

This too shall pass.  You were pumped full of air & fluids in the hospital and it takes time to work it all out.  Sip, sip, sip...walk, walk, walk.
It's so hard right now, we've been waiting so long for this to happen and we want to see losses right away.  Hang in there, you'll start dropping weight soon.
Good to see you post.  Keep us updated as to how you're doing.

Oh yes, I remember that feeling well. I was up 17 lbs over my preop weight when I came home. They pump you full of liquids and air when you are in the hospital.

I wish I could give you a time frame or a secret fix, but It will come off in its own time. Just get up and about as much as you can.  That will help with the ate-a-basketball feeling. No doubt it's uncomfortable and it will take up to several days to go away. You've got a lot of gas in there. If it helps, take gas-ex, though one of the doctors told me the gas is outside our intestines and thus it shouldn't help. It did for me though so it's worth a try. It's available in chewables.

You were on IVs in the hospital so it will take a bit to get the extra fluids out too.

It's all quite normal. But unfortunately, the only thing you can do besides walking is just wait for it to go away.

It will soon be over!

Hope that helped a bit,
Anna

HI Stefan its so great to see you posting.
What you are feeling is normal and it does take time to get it out of you system. Lots of moving will help.

Well, congrats on the surgery and hope you are doing great!

Thanks, Angela. Being post-op for a week now with not a lot of change is getting old. I am hoping to sit down at my desk and start working on the pile on Monday but I'd sure like to come to it with some progress on "the project," Had lots of great comments from others mostly saying be patient. So I'm being patient tonight.

take care,

Stefan

I hate water weight!  I was one pound heavier at 1 week post op than I was the day of surgery. Donna assured me it would come off within the next week and she was right.  My one week appt was on a Thurs and by my next appt w/ the nutritionist on Tuesday, I'd lost 10lbs (9 from day of surgery).  It will come off, it's frustrating, I know.  One day I did notice I was peeing more than I had been, watch for that - It'll probably be a good signal that you're starting to release the excess fluid.

Hi Kristy. Thanks for your advice. I got on the treadmill for a while this afternoon. Hasn't helped yet but maybe later. I'm anxious to get out of "surgery mode", get dressed and move on.

Have a great week.

Most likely post surgery excess air!  Move as much as possible and that gets it worked out faster!

You're doing great!
