OT...Nic's speech

For those of you that don't get to Nic's Caring Bridge site I had to share this with you. I am so proud of my wonderful grandson. I can't really even express it in words.

Here is his speech.........

Dearest People, Nic has an assignment due when he returns to school on Tuesday (they have today off due to the Martin Luther King, Jr holiday). He had to write his own version of the "I Have a Dream" speech. He did it at LaGuardia airport in NYC on our way home. I wanted to share it with you...

I Have A Dream

I have a dream that one day cancer will be as far gone as the dinosaurs. And that no one will ever have to deal with this disease again. I have dealt with this three times and now I am likely to get a special treatment to hopefully get rid of this unseeable, unthinkable, and unimaginable thing. I have a dream to one day be a major contributor in ridding of this disease especially and mostly in kids, because I too have gone through what other patients with childhood cancer have gone through. I have a dream that one day people will realize that cancer is more of a threat to people than any other type of killer. It is silent, it is fast growing, it is unnoticeable, and most important of all incurable. And I have a dream that one day childhood cancer will be as widely known as breast cancer, from the tropical islands of the Bahamas to the bitter cold of Alaska. And from the hills of San Francisco to the valleys of Wisconsin.

As a survivor of neuroblastoma, one type of childhood cancer, three times, I know what it is like to be in hospital beds, and surgeries and waiting rooms. My dream is that there will be something easy for childhood cancer patients to receive that will cure their cancer without having to go through chemotherapy, radiation, bone marrow biopsies and transplants. And more chemotherapy and more radiation and unbelievable types of treatments when it returns. From the words of a cancer survivor, if you are able to avoid cancer, do it, whatever it takes. The best way to help keep cancer away is to keep a healthy diet and exercise and be smart. Please take this advice and hopefully you can stay away from the worst type of killer out there. In my opinion, if you can win the battle against cancer, you can do anything.

Connie,

You are blessed to have such a wise, compassionate grandson that thinks of others suffering in the midst of his own.  Nic is a fantastic young man and if anyone can defeat this, HE CAN.
