Slow weight loss.....

Hello all.  I was just wondering if any one else experienced slow weight loss after surgery.  My RNY was done Jan 15th, and I was at 236.  I had a great weigh in at my first week post-op appointment -223, which was last Friday.  Today however, I am only at 221.  Do you all think this is pretty normal?  I guess I was just thinking (hoping) that I'd have HUGE weight loss in the first couple weeks.  I still have a fear that I'll be the only person this surgery doesn't help!  Any comments would be lovely!!!  Thanks!

First thought - was that first post-op weight on the same scale as the one that read 236 pre-op?  Was the 221 weight taken on the same scale as the 223 weight?   There can be a variation between scales.  And yes, your body could be shocked to have lost such a huge amount in such a short amount of time, so it's hanging on to what it's got for dear life - until you can PROVE to your body that you will continually provide it with the fluids and protein it needs, it may hoard what it's got for a while.

Best thought?  Stay away from your scale for a good long time.  I've said it before, I'll say it again.  Until you get close to where you want to be, ONLY weigh when you go in for appointments.  The weight will not fall off you while you are closely watching it.  But if you just pay attention to your WLS lifestyle and not so much the numbers, you'll be pleasantly surprised by the drops!

I had my surgery on Dec. 1. And I can tell you the first few weeks, I barely lost anything. And you did lose 13 pounds in one week, remember that.

You cannot expect your weight loss after surgery to be consistent. Sometimes you will lose 10 lbs and sometimes you might even go up (gasp, I know) even if you are following your plan religiously. I just had a week where I gained a few pounds (likely due to my exercise and strength training).

Darla is so so right. Ditch the scale and weigh monthly or if that's too much for you, weekly. It will save you much grief.

Good luck and relax!

I had surgery 12/30 and lost lbs the first week also,  but then I stalled for about a week and half.  Then the scaled moved again.  I heard the body has to adjust.  Its pretty typical.  It continues to move now, but I hear the stall will happen again.  It will happen.

Hang in there...you are doing just fine. Sometimes people just don't lose as quickly as others. Give your body time to adjust.

Be sure you are getting all your protein and water in .....that will help some.

You will be melting away before long!!

Hugs...connie d
