Malabsorption done
I saw my OB DR. on Friday and we came to the conclusion that my malabsorption from the RNY is done. I gained 8 lbs in 4 weeks, trying to eat too much for the baby. She told me to let up on the food for now, go figure!
I'm kind of bummed though to know that I'm done with that part of the surgery, I know they say "our body will adjust" but I don't want it too, I know it has to stop somewhere, but it's kind of depressing when you know it's done, UGH!
Thank for letting me vent.

I'm not so sure I would buy what your OB is selling. Does she have much experience with RNY? I have heard too many knowlegable people argue this point - does malabsorption end? I don't believe it does. Can we stop taking vitamins and other supplements after a year or two? NO - we can't.
I believe that there is likely some "lessening" degree of malapsorption, that our bodies and our intestines do adjust somewhat. But I seriously doubt it ENDS.
Just be sure you get enough nutrition for that baby, and don't worry TOO much about gaining weight. Of course you don't want to gain excessively, but you DO want to make sure that lil' peanut gets what he or she needs!
I'm SURE there's got to be a forum on OH for pregnancy after WLS - have you looked for that?

Imperfect does not = unsuccessful
I wonder if I have misunderstood Dorothy? She said we still have to take the vitamins, but we won't be able to lose the wt. as easy as we did at first, because I thought it was a forever thing too? I don't know?
I did check out the pregnancy board, no luck there, some are pretty snotty!
Thanks Darla
I know we don't lose weight as easily after the "honeymoon" is over... frankly, these last 25 or so pounds I want to drop have been a *****!!! But the malabsorption? I'm sure that's still there... I can eat more than I could a year ago, too.
Sorry the pregnancy board wasn't more helpful.. that's a shame!

I agree with Darla. I'm nearly 6 years out and I believe I still malabsorb. Just in the last year I came up vitamin D deficient AFTER taking a supplement. I was never low before. That tells me I'm malabsorbing to some degree. So I upped the vitamin D considerably to get back into the normal range.
You're not done. Just try and eat healthy for your pregnancy and don't fret about the rest.

Yes I have gained and lost again. It doesn't fall off like it did the first 6-12 months post-op, but I just quit eating so much crap and I've lost nearly 20 lbs in the last 4-6 months or so. I really didn't change my meal portions because they are still pretty small, just quit grazing so much on "garbage".
I'm 4 lbs away from the weight I was at when I had my body fat measured by underwater weighing at St. Thomas years ago. The Dr. then told me I didn't need to lose another pound. I'll never forget that day! So yes...it can be done.

I don't know about being done, but look at how much you have lost and now your growing a bambino. You have been eating more and trying to accomodate for that without knowing how your body would react. I would talk with your WLS staff in addition to the OBGYN and eat healthy, let nature do it's thing
