Finding the right surgeon and post op plan
Hi all
I finally took the step and joined the forum. About two years ago I visited a clinic in Edina, MN for a info session....it was pretty run of the mill, impersonal and frankly a bit disappointing. My main issue was the 'foods' that the suggested post surgery. I'm by no means a Saint, but I was so taken aback by the 'quality' of the foods that they suggested that it made me worry about the authenticity of the program itself.
I'm a whole foods, organics kind of girl so the thought of eating chemical laden 'puddin' kid of freaks me out.
Is there any plan out there that is open to substituting 'organic' alternatives to the processed lists I was shown.
I come from a family with a history of diabetes, HBP and weight issues...both parents are Type II and I see this in my future and it scares me deeply. I have a crappy thyroid, and have tried repeatedly in the past five years to lose the 150lbs I gained during my 'infertility/pregnancy loss years to no avail'
My sister had RNY surgery 2 years ago and has lost 140lbs. She is doing great. I hope it will work for me as well.
If anyone has suggestions or 'recommendations' on programs that have a little bit more of a natural foods approach, please let me know.

I went through Park Nicollet Clinic. I really recommend them. They never told me what kind of food I can and cannot eat... in terms of chemical foods or organic. I know there are vegetarians who have gone through the program successfully. I think the main idea is that you need protein first... and then the rest. That can work with organic eating any day!
I honestly feel that the Duodenal Switch may be a great procedure for you. Some patients only have the "switch" portion of the surgery performed to rid themselves of the diabetes, so it's a great procedure to help prevent that for you.
Also, your quality of foods is more "normal" with the DS, like you are used to now. Protein first, of course, as with any plan, but I purchase meat at Fresh & Natural in Shoreview, and I also purchase a lot of our other groceries there as well, especially nuts & fruits & cheeses.
The one thing I want to mention about the DS is that it FIXES your metabolism. No other surgery can say that.
Please visit www.dsfacts.com and the DS board on this site for additional information, or PM me with any questions/comments you may have!
Best of luck to you on your decision! It is a very personal decision to make quite honestly, but we can all help to inform you on each surgery and our own personal experience.

thanks guys...
I'm really still in the 'research' part of this process...I want to meet with the right surgeon who can help me make the right choice as to what kind of surgery would best suit my particular case. I also need a good endocrinologist so that we can assess the hormone/thyroid issue first.
I'm going to need some serious research time on this
