Any DS people?

Hi! I was just wondering if there were any Duodenal Switch people on here. Who was your surgeon, how did they do, & are you pleased that you chose the DS over other procedures?  I posted a similar "?" in the DS forum, but it would be nice to get a few more homebodies info
Thanks!

the doctor's in TC's who do the DS are Buchwald (open only), Ikramuddin (open and Lap), Kellogg (open and Lap), and Leslie, (open and Lap).  They are all at the U of M.  Most MN DS'ers post on the DS board but I am sure Amy will see your post and help you out

The DS is a really good option.

Hi Earthy!
I'm here, I'm a DS'er!
Dr. Buchwald was my surgeon of choice, I had an Open DS on 12/23/08 and am down 40 pounds. WOOT!!!

Am I glad I chose the DS over other options? HECK YES WOMAN!!!
And I did my stinkin' research for 2 years, so I knew what I wanted and what I was getting myself into.

What else ya wanna know? LOL!

I'm here for ya girl!

Sorry, I must have missed you posting on the DS board!  I had Dr Buchwald for my revision.  There are several DS post-ops in MN, but most really do post on the DS board, since there isn't much DS info here on the MN board - kind of hard to get advice or suggestions on the stuff (like vitamins and diet) from people who don't have the same surgery.  Since there aren't many from MN, most of our info generally needs to come from the bigger pool on the DS board.

I've done well and I'm thrilled.  My DS was open, but I'd had a VBG and a VBG revision already, so Dr B used the same scar/incision.  I have ZERO regrets about chosing the DS.

I think I saw your post in the DS forum and might have even replied, but I'll post again, why not?  LOL.  I had open DS with Dr. Buchwald in October.  He's fantastic!  He has the greatest personality and he's a masterful surgeon.

I first looked at lap-banding but tossed that idea when it was clear that my BMI was way too high to give me a good shot at success.  Plus the pamphlet said to avoid fibrous foods - well, my grandma died of colon cancer, plus I love veggies, so that seemed really weird advice if we are trying to eat healthy food post-op.

Then I figured I had to get RNY due to my bigger BMI and PCOS.  I didn't know much about DS but thankfully, my RNY got postponed and I had time to research it.  When I realized I could lose the same amount or more weight, keep it off easier, and also eat a little more indulgent diet, it was a no-brainer!  I was a DSer at heart.

I love my DS.

Hello Earthy!

I had Lap-DS with Dr. Ikramuddin on January 26th. I had 3 pre-op appts with him, he is a great Dr., busy, but will take the time to thoroughly answer all your questions, a written list has always served me well.

I researched for about 3 years and came to the conclusion that the DS would be best for me, wrt my lifestyle, my weight loss and health goals.

He does require some wight loss before surgery, not easy but doable, I kept my 'eyes on the prize' and ploughed through.

Good luck with your process and surgery.

Welcome, Earthy.  I do usually stay on the DS board for the same reasons Mary has given but must say I'm not there all that much, either.  I had the DS (open) with Dr. Buchwald on 12-15 and have lost 51 pounds so far.  I am so glad I chose the DS over anything else.  I love having a fully functioning stomach, no blind stomach, being able to eat full fat foods, and not having to live with a fear of dumping if I eat something "bad."  Then, of course, there are the studies that show the DS gives a better sustained long term weight loss and lower failure rate.  To me, there was no question as to which surgery to have.  Do you have a surgeon yet?  How far in the process are you?

EDIT:  I see you're with Dr. I, but what does the "Other" with an August 08 date mean?  I thought that was the space that showed your surgery type and surgery date?

Hello! The 'other' is the clinical trial for s new option for minimally invasive bariatric surgery.  Look up EMPOWER clinical trial or VBloc.

I did google this.  I'm assuming you didn't have it done because it says for the first year some participants will have the device shut off and it hasn't been a year since since 8-08?  All I know is that I always ate whether I was hungry or not, so having something block the "I'm hungry" signal from getting to my brain wouldn't have helped!  LOL
