Just take a "Vacation". Upon your return, tell them someone stole your Stomach in Vegas, then they will be amazed as the pounds drop off, they will have to believe your story.

Or you can just give them a heads up since you don't know when you'll be out and for how long yet.

It was easy telling my boss because most of my co-workers worked Fries already.

It kinda depends on what kind of job you have.....Will they have to train someone for your position?

I would think you could wait till you get the green light from insurance.......But if they need to train someone for your job it might be courteous to let them know soon.....

I guess I would tell them when you know the specific date, otherwise it does them no good.

I didn't talk to my direct supervisor.  Instead I talked to my HR person this past Friday because I wanted to know about short-term disability options.

I haven't had my surgeon consult yet (looking forward to meeting Dr. Drew at Abbott Northwest though!) but I told her that I'll be doing it within a month and that I'll be sure to let them know.

I've already had people asking my why I'm not having any candy (girls in the office once in a while pass around the bag of Lindor truffles *dies* when it's a rough day) or why I've been sometimes drinking slimfast.  So far I've told them that I'm trying to lose some weight and cut out some carbs.

I'm giving my supervisor the heads up that possibly this summer I might be out for 3 weeks.  I work in the call center of a printing company and I'm one of the higher trained folks so it's hard to lose one of us for a short while.

I told my boss and talked to HR about 2 weeks before my surgeon consult, figuring I'd be scheduled within a month after that. I needed to do some training with a co worker in preparation for my absense, so it was the right amount of time, I felt.

My Surgery is scheduled for March 30th.  In late Feb. when I got my surgery date I told my boss that I am having a surgery and will need at least a week off if not two or on the second week come back at 1/2 days pending on how I feel.  I filled out a vacation request and that's what I said.  They don't have any right to ask you what for, and if they do and you don't want to say be non-chalant about it and just say it's a personal thing and let it be at that.
I work in a small office enviorment with mostly men - about 12 of us in the office.  You can tell them if you want as well but as with any time off request give them as much notice as possible.  I would wait  until you get your surgery date though.
