The good and the not as good news

I went to see the Endocrinologist yesterday.  It was an interesting appointment.  I have a great deal of respect for this doc, and he has really helped me manage my diabetes post op.

My A1C (3 month measure of blood sugar control) is down to 6.4 which shows good control of the diabetes.  I am now down to 5 units of insulin per day, and will hopefully be off of it completely by June.  After being insulin dependent for 20 years this is amazing to me.

The not as good news is that he also put me back on high blood pressure medication.  Even though my pressure is "normal" in the morning- by 2:30 in the afternoon it is up to 130/75.  The dose is much lower, but it is still hard to comprehend needing the meds.

Finally, he drew blood for thyroid levels to see if the Synthroid is doing the job it is designed for.  I will get those results later in the week.  Hopefully the levels will be within the normal range- although I wouldn't mind if he said it was still low so that I can look forward to gaining more energy.  We shall see.

Sorry to ramble on, just needed to get this out.

Stay warm today!

Congratulations Reenie!!  Lowering your insulin is great news.
Maybe your body just needs some more time to adjust to all the changes.
I pray for continued better health for you.

Congrats on the good report on your diabetes!!

Your blood pressure will level out again...anything could bring it up a little. Watch your salt intake.

Hope your thyroid test comes back good. I know when my thyroid is off....my energy level takes a dive too!!

Hey Reenie,

Thanks for the post. I'm insulin dependant as well, I currently take 6 shots a day (2 Shots of Byetta, 3 shots of Novalog (before meals) and a healthy dose (51 Units) of Lantis before bedtime.  At my worse, my A1C has been 17, and at my best, it's been 7.  I have only been doing the 6 shots for about 9 months, but has been on insulin for a couple years.  I've heard WLS will help reduce my need for insulin, but it's good to see someone of my peers that I can reach out to and ask some questions (and it don't hurt that I'm having my procedure with the same surgeon group you had your WLS with).

I go in for my consult tomorrow and I'll get my date.  Very Excited.  Keep up the good work Reenie!!

I was put back on blood pressure meds again after a few months of surgery and still need to take them even though I've lost nearly 140 lbs.  At first I kind of felt like I'm doing something wrong because I now weigh in the 180's and am only 29 years old I felt like I shouldn't have to be on bp meds, but I know I'm doing what I need to do my lifestyle changed and my doctors just tell me my bp issues are just something I inherrited.

Hey Reenie...glad to hear your A1C is down, that is really good control. As for your blood pressure meds at least the dose is lower. That is a very good thing.

This must be one of those mornings. See, you on Saturday.

Reenie, That's wonderful news. I am so happy for you.

I have never had to take meds for a high blood pressure in my whole life. Until 2 months ago, (even after losing 177 pounds) it is a very small dosage but none the less it is a pill I have never taken before.

Hey Reenie - I've been on Synthroid since I was a teenager and definately feel my best when I'm on the low end of the "normal" range.  If you're normal, but on the higher side of norm and I'd ask  what the doc thinks about bumping the dose just a tinge. :-)
