I have done research on RNY and am looking at having surgery done at Mayo Clinic/St. Mary's.  Has anyone else had  the procedure done in MN?  Your ideas/concerns are greatly appreciated.

I had mine there four years ago.  I have to go down there next month for my yearly follow-up.  I've had no complications and would do it again in a heartbeat if I had to.  I had no complaints about anything.

You'll meet with an endocrinologist who will coordinate all your care.  You will need to attend the information session.  For all your initial appointments/testing, plan on being down there 3-5 days (I was there for three).

You will have to meet with a psychiatrist/psychologist down there, but can continue your appointments with one wherever you live to go through the LEARN program.  They will give you a name or two of one you can see.  You will need to buy the LEARN book for this (available in the Mayo store).  You won't have to take the MMPI like some programs require.  The psych said that they prefer to talk to people.  There was about a 90-question questionnaire that you fill out while you're waiting.

They say the time from your first appointment to surgery will be 9-12 months (it was 10 for me).  I was in the hospital for three days and got my drain out before I left (yay!).  If you have sleep apnea, they will keep you in ICU the first night.

I can't think of anything else right now, but PM me if you have any other questions!

Thanks so much for your reply.  I have met with my endocrinologist, nutritionist, had blood work and met with a pysychologist at Mayo back in February.  I go back In April to meet with my endocrinologist and the surgeon.  I have gone through a sleep study here in my hometown and will have to go on cpap thearpy.  The doctor here is faxing the info to my endrocrinologist at Mayo.  I hope to have the RNY procedure done in August.  I live out of state in Kansas and am so excited to be going to Mayo...they are a Blue Center of Excellance and I have BCBS FEP insurance that covers the services.  Thank you.

I am having my surgery this week at Mayo by the same surgeon you have a consult set up with.  I would be happy to share my experience with you.

Hope all is well with you.  I am anxious to hear all about your surgery, what you thought about the doctor, hospital care, etc.  I have a Dr. visit w/the Endocrinologist & Surgeon in 2 weeks and am so looking forward to the next step.  Looking forward to hearing from you.
