Hey everyone I have a question.......  Does any one have knee pain after the weight loss?  I don't remember having pain before, but then again I had lots of cushion there maybe I didn't notice......  I have pain in my right knee when I have my knee crossed or sit indian style on the floor......what could that be?  Any ideas?

Thanks,
Marsh

Good Morning Marsha,

Knees are not made on a pivot point system. I think ( me,myself) that when we bend them to cross over, sit Indian style, we are setting them up in such a manner that is not their natural structure. This putting pressure on the joints, causing some pain/discomfort.

I get knee pain or rather a stiffness when I do the leg cross over part. I also have noticed when I lay on my side in bed, that I can't stand my knees to touch. It is bone to bone and it hurts! 8 Months ago I would of never thought of complaining about bone to bone LOL

I think we just have to be mindful and change positions more often to not get stiff/sore.

I had knee pain for YEARS prior to WLS, and I assumed that when I had lost 3 - 4 - 5 bags of Hazel food, the pain would simply vanish!

Wrong...

It's not nearly as bad as it used to be, but it's still there.  And one of the reasons, you hit right on the head - much of the former cushion is gone!   Our bodies can develop aches as we lose weight rapidly, because our center of gravity shifts, and our bodies aren't familiar with their new balance.

I sleep with a pillow between my knees now.  Helps a lot.  And when I have a 12 hour day on my feet (MOA, ValleyFair, State Fair, etc...) I KNOW my knees will pay for it for a few days after.  So I take Advil Liquigels, because Tylenol won't touch pain like that.

But I'd never go back, that's for DARN sure!!!   Ya know, yesterday I went to Target to buy a couple of hand weights to work my arms and shoulders.  I found nice 5# barbells.  Carried them around Target for a while before I paid, and DANG if I couldn't feel those extra pounds in my knees!  UN. FRICKIN. REAL.   How could I have carried 32 of those suckers around for so many years???

I was scheduled to have knee surgery 2 months after WLS, but I had lost enough weight that it stopped hurting - for abut 18 months.  I've had cortisone in one knee and Synvisc in the other (several times) and need to go back for another cortisone shot soon.  Although weight loss can allieviate the pain, it can't reverse arthritis.

My advice would be - not to cross your legs or sit indian style and see if that helps   If it doesn't make an appointment with an orthopedic surgeon for an evaluation.
