Excited, but very nervous.

Hey there,

Thought I would post.  I have a lot running through my mind.  I am about to start my pre-op diet of protein shakes and I am a little nervous.  I am about to venture into something that is going to change my life forever, or at least I hope it will.  I can't help but think that this is going to be yet another failed attempt at weight loss.  I am having lap done on the 21st and I start the protein shake diet on Saturday, missing Easter dinner.  But, this probably won't be the only sacrifice in this journey!

I guess I needed to vent a little, I have been having 2nd thoughts about this surgery, but I know that I need it and I know that it is going to better my life in so many ways.  Maybe I am just nervous and scared cause I have been overweight as long as I can remember.

It's almost like a grieving process, having to let go of your normal relationship with food.  I am sure once I start to see results, I will feel more like it is worth it.

Congratulations, you're normal.

It IS scary to have surgery to correct your weight.  But sometimes, I believe it's the one thing that WILL work!  And you ARE going through a grieving process!  You think you'll be saying goodbye to all your favorite foods.  But ya know what?  You WILL be able to eat just about anything you want, eventually.  Just not the massive quantities most of us needed to quench our appetites before WLS.  And because of that, you'll appreciate those favorites way more than you do now!  (For me, it was crab legs.  I swear, I could eat 6 or 7 clusters or more pre-op!  Now?  2, and I'm STUFFED!!  But dayum, they taste good!!)

Just don't lose sight of the reasons you're putting yourself through this - I can only guess, but I'm sure they're all good.  You CAN have this, it CAN and WILL work for you if you're ready!

As ALWAYS, Darla says it beautifully.

Brian, yes you are going to miss some things....but you MUST count both sides, and you will see that the BLESSINGS are in your favor.

You will NOT miss kicking objects you need to pick up together so you only need to bend over once.
You will NOT miss getting winded after one flight of stairs.
You WILL miss large pockets on your jeans because the smaller jeans have smaller pockets.
You will NOT miss  NOT being able able to fit on amusement park rides.

Go for it, you WILL NOT regret it.  If you were to ask anyone on this board, the biggest regret we have is NOT doing this sooner, and nearly all of us would do it again (some of us have) if we had to.

It's normal at your stage to be nervous....VERY normal...in fact if you wern't you would be rare.  You have reached a point in your life where you are ready to take charge and start down the path of the most certain way to lose the weight once and for all.  It is a tool....not the cure.  Keep in mind that you must use the tool to be successful long term.  Eventually the tools strenght will wane....but hopefully by that time you are able to keep it going with new habits.

Good luck.

Hey Brian, I have been there, too.  It was just two months ago that I was having the same thoughts you are having.  I was worried about missing my favorite foods but I have done just fine and don't miss them as much as I thought I would.  If I think I want something I can't have I remind myself that I will be able to eat it someday.  My favorite foods are not gone forever, just MIA for now.

Dr. Jones took great care of me and I am sure he will do the same for you.  The nursing staff at Methodist were amazing and did everything they could to make my stay pleasant and comfortable.

Best of luck to you.  We will be saving a spot on the losers' bench for you!

Hi Brian,
Totally normal to have these feelings at this point. But, just think about life if you don't make these changes. Having the band will help immensely! I remember thinking about having to give up some foods and......
1. I really can eat just about anything now, just in smaller quantities
2. The benefits of having lost the weight, more than make up for any foods that I don't have anymore.
Your relationship with food will change - but all for the good of your health.
We have a group of bandsters who meet every Sunday night at 6:30 pm at Starbucks on Foley Blvd, just off of Hwy 10, by the Showtime Theater. If you ever want to come and ask questions and just be with others who know what you're going through, come on down! (We have 4-5 guys who show up.)
Congrats on your surgery. You are doing a great thing for yourself!

Brian,

Hang in there!  I'm four weeks pre-op and am slowly starting to think how my life is going to change.  I'm glad you posted your thoughts....
First, because it makes us pre-op folks fee like we are not alone and second, everyone's responses are an excellent reminder of why we are choosing to take this journey.

Hi Brian.  Good luck to you during this exciting time.  I'm only a little over 2 months from my surgery and I would do it again in a heartbeat.  One of the best decisions I've ever made.  I wouldn't be able to do this without this tool.  You'll do great!

You are having the same thoughts that many of us have had prior to surgery. It is a big decision to have any type of WLS but you have to look at the big picture and think about what your future will be after surgery. The health benifits alone are great and the increased energy level will amaze you. Walking without all the aches and pains in your legs and knees as well as not getting out of breath after going up a flight of stairs is also a plus. I'm just about 7 months since surgery and wish I'd have done this years ago but who knew I'd feel this good. Good luck to you and keep us posted on your progress.

Bob
