my surgery is scheduled for this Friday. I am getting pretty nervous and wondering if I am making the right decision. Any encouragement anyone can give me would be great? Thank you.

Welcome Laura!!

You have come to the right place for support and encouragement!  The feelings you are having right now are totally normal- I would worry more if you weren't nervous.  Just remember that the surgery is the first step to your new life- then the hard work begins!
You'll do great!  Keep coming here and asking questions!!

Yup, normal.  Just keep coming here - read profiles for inspiration.  Remind yourself of all the WL attempts you've made before reaching this point, and how "successful" they were.  Remind yourself of all the things you WANT from weight loss  - this surgery can help you achieve them.  Most people here who are a ways out and have experienced a significant weight loss will say their only regret is not having done this sooner.

If you truly aren't ready, then don't do it.   But if you are just nervous?  Don't put it off.  Take the leap of faith - trust that your doctors and your insurance company have found you to be deserving and ready.  And hang on - your life is soon to change, SIGNIFICANTLY, for the better!

Hi Laura,

I'm 4.5 years out and soooooo very glad I did it. Like Darla said, I am one who wishes I would have done it sooner.
Having said that........keep in mind that it is still hard work.........get that....HARD WORK!!
We have had/are having stomach surgery, not brain surgery. That means that my issues with food are still there and I need to deal with them.

Best of luck and keep coming back to the boards here and any gathering you can.

Hi Laura - welcome.  I agree keep coming here for support and answers to your questions.  I am just 2 weeks post op and feel great.  If you have a scheduled date for this Friday you've already invested a lot of time and effort into this journey and even though your scared it will be okay.  I think that before surgery a ton of questions run through your mind however, immediately after it was done I had a sense of relief, accomplishment and joy knowing that this huge step was over and I was finally able to go to the next stage of changing my life.
Be as educated as you can and know the pluses and minuses before you go in so you are preparred and not side-swiped.  Then the morning of go in with a positive outlook and the Lord on your side and you will be just fine and so excited to move past this step.  Keep us posted and keep coming here!
Take care,
Sal

Hi Laura.  Congratulations on taking care of you.  I know I'm glad I did it even though I'm early out.  Like Elena said, keep your eye on the prize.  We know what we want.  And we can do what we need to get there!  Best of luck to you and wishing you an uneventful surgery!  Dolly

Welcome to the boards! I am glad you posted!  We all have our stories to share.

You are on the edge of making a drastic step to take back your body and your health.  Yay You!

The way I looked at it was - if you do what you've always done you will get what you've always got!  You are making a positive choice to get healthy.

Honestly - and I would guess there are more than me on the board that will say this....The surgery is the best decision I made for myself.

Ask questions - post your concerns - the support from these boards and the friends made on this journey are so wonderful and will help you be successful.

Best wishes on your path!

Welcome, Laura!

If you are at peace with your decision, than you will know it deep in your heart. Run with that! That's my advice.

Yes, I had some nervousness the morning of surgery, but nothing that kept me from getting on that OR table! Because, I knew in my heart that I was 100% at peace with my decision and it was right for me.

Almost 4 months out from my Duodenal Switch, down 60 pounds, and feeling like I've taken 40 years off my life to be honest! I can move more freely and not tire so easily. That is such an amazing feeling - and one I didn't expect, but am so thankful for!

I promise you that if you KNOW it's right for you, do not look back - just keep looking ahead!

Best wishes!!
