A very rough week
Well, I've had a VERY rough week.
I was supposed to have my lap band surgery on Wed 4/15. Last Tuesday, day 3 of my liquid diet I started getting pains in my left side of my ribcage every time I took a breath. So I called my doc, who sent me to Methodist emergency.
After 6 hours of EKGs, X-ray, CT scans, and blood labs I was checked into the hospital with 5-6 pulmonary embolisms in both my right and left lungs. The cause a blood clot in my left leg. My leg had been killing me for a week or so like a charlie horse that wouldn't go away, and I chalked it up to a new pair of heels I had bought. It wasn't heels, it was a danger sign I ignored. It looks like my birth control may have been the cause of the problem.
Thankfully, it was caught in time. I was in the hospital for 4 days, and now I'm home resting. I am thankful to be alive and on the mend, and thankful I didn't go into surgery with embolisms in my lungs.
Dr.Weatherille came by my room, and told me they'll start to reschedule my surgery in 3-6 months which was a bummer for me...but my health will always come first. As soon as I get the blood thinners straightened out, we can start to look at the band again.

You are VERY LUCKY! It's amazing to me how we can ignore signs, just brush them off as an annoyance we must deal with. Our bodies aren't stupid - and you are very fortunate to have followed your doctor's instructions.

This will happen when the time is right. For now, you just take care of more immediate concerns and get yourself back on the right track!

Imperfect does not = unsuccessful
Holy cow! You have totally had a rough week!
Thank goodness you didn't go in to surgery like that! Honestly... I was really scared about the same thing happening to me. I use the Nuvaring for birth control (I changed to this so I wouldn't have to stop taking it before the surgery), and a some studies show that this particular type might put you at an even higher risk for strokes and clots. When I asked all of my doctors about it (PCP/gyno/Dr. Wetherille) they all thought it was fine, but did add in that most of their patients are not on birth control, so I should monitor myself (to look out for symptoms like you had). I didn't have an issue but I was still scared about it nonetheless! Anyway, I'm really glad you decided to finally check it out and not disregard the problem!!!
Even though it's a drag that you might have to wait a bit for the WLS... better safe than sorry! And before you know it, that time will have passed and you'll be ready for the band!
Hang in there!!
