Hi.  I am two weeks post. op.  My surgery went well and I am feeling great.  I lost 15 pounds from a 10 day liquid diet and 15 after surgery.  However,  I have not lost any weight in 5 days and have gone up and down a pound in the five days.  Is this normal?  Also, I can eat more than the 3TBS. they say to eat.  I can eat double that.  I try not to, but then feel hungry.  What's going on with that?  Any ideas?  I also have added a little sugar to my malt o meal.  It does not make me sick.  But is there another reason I should not do so?  I have snuck a couple of cheez its, too.  Am I already heading in a bad direction?  I feel satisfied with 2 cheez its, but will I keep adding more or sabotage my goals?  Please help!!!  Thank you!

What kind of surgery do you have? Your info doesn't say and you didn't mention it in your post?

Are you getting your water in?  From what I've read from a lot of people it seems like getting enough water in is very important for loss along with making sure you eat your protein first.  I'm not sure cheese its are a good idea since they're mostly carb.  Try cheese, yogurt, and some kind of protein supplement.  To be honest, I'm just recommending what I've read since I'm pre-op.

Yep.  All my water.  It's hard, but I am doing it.  Yes, I know cheez its are not a good choice.  That is my point.  My students were having them as a snack.  I "grazed" on two.  My point is I don't want to feel "deprived" so is allowing myself  two better than feeling like I am "dieting" again.  I can't have cheese yet.  Only yogurt, milk, refried beans and pureed turkey or chicken.  Thanks for the reminder of the carbs.

The two week no weight loss is very normal your body is trying to recover from all the changes I'm sure if your not losing weight at this point its coming off in inches.   Are you drinking anything with your meal because when I drink while I eat I can eat a whole lot more food.  Try to decide if it really is hunger your feeling or if its head hunger there is a big difference and it takes time for our bodies to know what hunger really is.  If you really are hungry then try eat higher protein foods.   Not everyone dumps on sugar.  I usually add splenda to my malt o meal that way I can sweeten it up with out adding extra calories.

As far as Cheez Its go they were my snack of choice after surgery I'm not sure if it just because they are crispy and go down well or if it was the salt I was craving but I loved Cheez its.  However they aren't the ideal snack extra calories we don't need. I  ate my share of Cheez Its and still lost weight in the begining.  But now almost 15 months out I can eat a lot more cheez its then I could in my early post op days so I try to stay FAR away from them.

Im not gonna lecture - it all comes down to choices - I know for me that starting sugar or empty carbs was a slippery slope - My  body started to crave those things more and then I found myself snacking more than I wanted to.

You will also find you lose weight in waves - lose quickly and stall - lose quickly and stall - your body needs to adjust and rearrange the reserves - the weight didn't come on all at once and it is not gonna fall off all at once either.

Best wishes on your journey! Yay You!

What you're experiencing is totally normal after surgery. You either lose pound or inches. Not both. You're still recovering from a MAJOR surgery and anesthesia. Give yourself a little break and throw away your damned scale. That thing will make you insane.

Make sure you follow the tules in the purple book to a "T"! Don't eat more than you're supposed to. You may think you're hungry, but you're not. It's head hunger. Do not use sugar - it's why you're heavy in the first place. Try something without calories like Splenda or Equal. Don't push the limits now, because it leads to a very very very slippery slope. Most Post-Ops wish they had never tried sugar post WLS.

Good luck.

I fully buy the not wanting to feel deprived issue - my evil snack of choice has been Fritos - again, with the salty/crunchy!  And although there is guilt whenever I allow myself to eat some, I will only eat one small handful - taken from the bag, placed in a bowl, bag put away and bowl taken to the table -  as opposed to putting away half a family size bag before WLS!

I also choose to practice forgiveness when I do screw up and eat something "evil".   I will make bad choices along the way, but WLS is for life.  We have to get up and deal with this new relationship with food every single day, from now on.  So if I'm going to prevent myself from going insane, I NEED to forgive myself, and put myself back on the wagon.  EVERY DAY.

That having been said, I DO believe it is TOO SOON for you to start testing the waters.  You need to measure your meals for a good long time, and trust that you are getting enough.  You need to focus on PROTEIN above all else right now.  If you think you feel hunger, you should A) DRINK!!, and B) determine if the "hunger" you are feeling is physical, emotional, or just plain ol' auto-pilot kicking in.  Personally, at almost 2 years out, I still NEVER feel a physical sensation of hunger.  Many do, I feel very fortunate that I don't.  Maybe you can convince yourself that you don't?   Drinking a lot helps a great deal, as does distracting yourself with house work, walks, exercise, whatever rings your bell.

Congrats!  And do NOT sweat the "stalls" - your body needs them!  Time for it to figure out what the devil you're doing to it, and re-distribute what it still has!  Just keep doing the right things, and you'll be well pleased with the results!

Hi--
congrats on your surgery!  yes, it is totally normal to stall out, especially after 2 weeks because you body is trying to heal and in shock still.  I too could eat more than the 3T from the start-my own personal thought is that we didn't have as much swelling as some people do, so there is a little more room from the begining-that said-DO try to stick to the guidelines.  Sugar may not make you dump now, because you are eating so little, but believe me, you don't want to use it-use some splenda or some fruit juice, it will be healthier.  Be sure that you are drinking your milk-it is protein, and will help you feel fuller.  2 cheezits obviously did not kill you-but don't do that to yourself.  The reason you are not on solids right now is because you are healing inside-solid food (even a bite) CAN hurt you-you really need to understand that.  Treat that new pouch gently!  You can actually start swelling in the new tissue by pushing it, so be good.  This is a lot to wrap your head around, I know-call and talk to the nurse or the nut at PNC, that is what they are there for.  Good luck!!
