VSG - Duluth, MN??

Is VSG surgery performed at St. Mary's in Duluth?

I don't think so.  The U of Mn or Mayo probably would do it, but I know the U hasn't done it as a stand alone procedure for a while.

I am from Duluth.   The only two forms of WLS done here at either hospital are RNY and Lapband.   St Luke's is also doing WLS here now.   It used to be only St Mary's.

When I was researching Dr. Krook at HCMC (Twin Cities area) was trained but had not yet performed any VSG's.  That was the only doctor in the state that I could find to do it at the time.

I would definetly check with the University of Minnesota.  They do the Duodenal Switch and could definetly do the VSG, but not sure they do it as a stand alone procedure yet.  Check it out though.  Dr Buchwald and Dr. Ikkramuddin would be the two surgeons that would be possiblilities.

Hi Mimitrud!  Yes, St. Mary's in Duluth does the VSG!  It's performed by Dr. Walter Medlin.  I myself will be attending the informational seminar in June.  If you're interested, I would call the weight management department at (218) 786-7830 because reserving a spot is required.

Thanks Kelly!  I am from Thunder Bay, Ontario. I am presently waiting for an appointment with the WLS friendly surgeon here in town. I had heard rumors that Dr. Medlin was now doing them. That makes it easier for me than travelling to Michigan!  I appreciate the info. Are you getting the VSG?

Hi Mimi!  I probably wouldn't even know the VSG even existed if I didn't work at St. Mary's.  I do Government billing.  I was at work one day and the Media Dept. sends out emails when they're doing a spot on the new.  There happend to be an email about a news spot by Dr. Medlin on the gastric sleeve.  I wondered what that was and started looking into it.  I have been interested in WLS in the past, but I've only ever known about the gastric and the band.  Neither one of those options seemed for me, so I never looked further.  I would VERY much like to get the VSG!  It's just such a happy medium between the other two.  There's no bypass to contend with and no band, fills or adjustments to worry about.  I don't know if I'll end up in surgery or not.  Physically I meet requirements.  I'm 5'5 and 247lbs.  So I have a BMI of almost 41.  I have a few, what I consider "minor" comorbids.  But I'm sure as years go on, they won't be so minor anymore!  But anyway, as of now, I know my insurance covers it, and I'm waiting to attend the informational seminar in June!  It's so nice to meet you!  Hope to talk to you much more!
