Have any of you women been told that they should stop birth control before surgery because of the risk of blood clots before surgery? or any other reason?  I'm just curious.

I'm on Nuva Ring btw... And I'm fully aware of the back up deal after RNY...

I have heard of this, I don't think it's uncommon.  I have a Mirena IUD, which has hormones, and they didn't have to remove that.  But I think the hormone level in my IUD is a lot lower than BCPs.

Some surgeons (like mine) recommend you don't rely solely on birth control pills after WLS.  Some of the pill's effectiveness can be lessened with malabsorption and rapid weight loss causes increased fertility.  My surgeon said to use mechanical methods like the IUD or condoms/spermicide in the rapid loss period.

Good luck!

I did have to stop my BC for one month prior to my surgery due to the risk of blood clots.   Good that you are aware of using two forms of BC afterwards....you can become fertile Myrtle.

I did not have to stop my birth control.   I was provided levonox suringes and I had to give myself blodd thinner shots for 10 days after surgery.    I am suppose to be taking asprin now.

Dr. Drew told me he wants his patients who are on birth control to stop their pills 3 weeks before surgery.  He said it's to reduce the risk of blood clots before and after surgery.  I can't remember how many weeks after surgery - not like we'll be having sex afterword right away anyway!

I'm on the pill and have been for a few years now.  I used to be on Depo Provera but hated how flat it made my moods.  My husband is really pushing for an IUD but I'm pretty sure my gyno would not recommend it for me since I have never been pregnant and I'm afraid of the device slipping after weight loss and the possibility of it making a hole in my uterine wall.  To be honest, it scares the hell out of me - funny how it would be an uncomfortable procedure for me but no change for him!

I'm totally okay with using the pill plus condoms plus whatever else like a spermicidal foam/gel.

But what about the depo shot

I personally will never go back on Depo.  It caused me to feel "bored" emotionally, totally dried up my sex drive figuratively and literally, and I did gain weight while on it.  I don't like shots or the idea of inserts.  I'd rather take a pill and use condoms and be done with it.  That's my personal opinion about it though.  Some may be much more comfortable with Depo.

All I have to say about Depo is that it caused MAJOR health problems in women and the FDA pulled it off the market at one point.. and for some reason its back. My womens clinic said they prescribe it to VERY FEW women... in only certain cases now.

Jay Sal I think just go the IUD.. you should message her with questions.

I personally advocate the Nuva Ring... check it out .. just google it. I love it. put it in, forget about it for 21 days.. take it out.. either get your period and you put a new one in 7days after you took the last one out, or if your doctor okays it then you can take the old ring out and put a new ring right back in and skip your period.. I love it!

I'm glad someone else likes the Nuvaring! I love it.

I switched to this because I too was told that if I was taking BC orally I would have to stop before and wait a few months to start taking it again. Honestly... I was a bit worried about the risk of blood clots, but both my gyno and Dr. Wetherille (surgeon) told me don't worry about it.

Although, if I remember correctly... there was someone that posted recently saying that she had blood clots and they figured it out just right before the surgery and they were thinking it was a result of BC? That freaked me out! I would think that this would be pretty rare though?

So your surgeons were not okay with the pill but they were okay with the Nuva Ring?  Maybe that's something I will have to look into.
