Want to know the truth

I am wanting to know the truth based on facts or life experience, I am not wanting someone to just try to scare me, OK? Since surgery which is now a bit past 5 weeks I have never been able to get in all the liquids and now that I am suppose to be eating I haven't been able to eat much either, I know I am no where near the protein for a day that I should be at. I throw up almost everything that goes down, if not all of it some of it. And because of the one dumping episode I am scared to death to try new things. I believe that a large part of my problem is self inflicted, I am eating too fast, and not chewing enough or somehow I swallow air and just feel full. So my question is if this keeps going what will happen to me? I have tried unjury unflavored and put in drinks and I don't like it, any other suggestions w/ how to get the protein in? And what about the liguids, popsicles go down good I eat probably 10 a day but thats only 2 oz. liquid/one. HELP!!

This has been the best decision besides marriage and kids that I have ever made!!

I struggled with the fluids (and still do) too.  My nutritionist told me to just do my best . . . in other words, don't make yourself sick over it because you can't get there overnight. Are you drinking skim milk (latte's, CIB, SF Hot Chocolate, etc.)?  I found that having a skim milk drink was a nice treat for me mid-morning and afternoon -- counts as protein AND fluid.  Some people on here talk about setting a timer to remind them to take sips for a few weeks until they get it as a habit.  As far as getting sick when you eat . . . I would say go back to basics and start over (Ground/pureed chicken and turkey (w/FF Gravy, BBQ sauce or Marinara), cottage cheese, yogurt, refried beans); measure it out; eat with a baby spoon or fork and put the utensil down between bites. Chew, chew, chew.  In answer to your main question - - what will happen if you don't get enough protein?  Eventually there are serious complications but it doesn't happen overnight (hair loss, large muscle atrophe).  The worst thing you can do though is psyche yourself out.  Just keep at it, you'll get there and don't be afraid to call your nutritionist/dietician for help.

I think the first thing you need to address is the throwing up.  You shouldn't be throwing up every time you eat.  That is not normal.  The first time I threw up after WLS was 2-3 years down the road when I was dumping bad from cherry Nyquil.  I know some folks have some trouble with eating too fast or not chewing or having a stricture in the stoma...which can cause vomiting.

Address the vomiting with your doc, nurse, nut....yourself....and the rest will figure it self out.  You can't continue vomiting every day and think you can get any nutrition in at all.  For a few weeks, fine...but a few months?  No.  You don't want to go down the road of malnutrition.

Life with WLS is not a life of vomiting daily.  Please seek medical help if you can't get it under control alone.

Linda, what Lori says is right on.  Vomiting as frequently as you are is not normal.  You should be under direct care of your physician to resolve this.  It's great to post the question here because chances are someone can share a similar experience, but still you need to seek professional help.

I appreciate the fact that you were bold enough to post your experience.  Sometimes all we read are the wow moments and triumphs.  The tribulations also happen and it's a great reality check for everyone.  We know there are risks with this surgery, everyone seems to understand them, but it helps everyone to see the problems play out.

You will get beyond this with the right help.  As a result, you will be able to chime in when someone down the road shares your experience.  Please let us know how things are going.  My prayers are with you as you get to the bottom of this.  Brighter days are ahead!

DEHYDRATION!!!
When you're dehydrated, you will not feel like eating or drinking and you will be nauseous. I am speaking from my experience.

You can try all you want to re-hydrate your self, but the BEST and QUICKEST way is to just go in & get the IV. And trust me when I tell you how much better you will feel afterwards.

Take Lori's advice and call your doc, because I agree, you should be able to eat without puking now.

Also, another trick I tried and had success with was taking a chewable Pepto about a 1/2 hour before I would eat. I'm not a RNY'er though, so just have your surgeon's office verify this is okay for you to take. I used that until I was 2 months out.

But the biggest thing is to stay hydrated. The protein will come in time.

If you don't like the Unjury, buy different protein shake samples at www.vitalady.com - I find her site to be an incredible resource for all of us. If you like bananas, I'd recommend trying the Champion Nutrition brand Pure Whey Stack in Banana Scream flavor. Each of us has a different tolerance for protein powders so the samples offer a nice option to try several to see what we can handle.
