SURREAL WOWs 4 ME today
I'm back from Mason City Iowa now. Wow, what a day. I had person after person not recognize me. It was like being a ghost, walking around a room where I knew everyone but no one knew or seemingly saw me. One lady I came up to and said "do you remember me?" She said no. I then said "I remember you" She then got visibly embarassed because she knew she should know me, but couldn't think of who I was. Her face turned BEAT RED. A similar story got repeated about 10 times. Only ONE person recognized me...and that was after about 30 seconds of starring. Everyone else needed to be re-introduced. Talk about surreal.
I did hear one annoying comment, but also saw that people were really perplexed at what to say to me. The comment was "Do you feel healthy now?"
I know people don't try to be rude or make comments that are annoying. It's just part of being who we are on this journey. We must live with it. I'd still rather hear the annoying comments then hear the comments I USED to hear.
If you want to hear more about Mason City, keep reading...I'll summarize why I went, otherwise, the wow moment stuff is done.
I was hired in 1990 by a radio station in Mason City to work as an operations director....hired right out of college. The format was (and continues to be) big band/inspirational. Therefore you might hear a christian song followed by Glenn Miller. Unique format but caters to the baby boomers. The station is listener supported (no commercials) and the "DJs" are made up of volunteers who give 2 hours a day or week and come to the studio, pick out their mix and spin records. My job was to train volunteers, schedule them, and work the first shift (morning drive). So over the years there were literally 100s of volunteers that loved doing that. But for me, when I worked there, I was pushing 350-400 lbs. Thats how they remember me. Today marked the 30th birthday of the formation of the radio station. They did an open house and invited listeners and volunteers to come see the studio and have some cake. They also sell a cookbook as a fund raiser every year. After working there for 5 years (1995) they laid me off and I moved on. Havn't work in radio since

I was so excited for you all day! I knew how much you looked forward to this! It must have been surreal! WOW! Congrats on an awesome day my friend!
I think that's cool when people don't recognize you, but it's definitely a trip, because to you, you look the same, right? At least that's how I have felt. Like why don't people recognize me? I'm still ME!
As for the "do you feel healthy now?" comment...did the person ask it in a rude tone? Otherwise, they probably wondered how the weight loss correlated with how you feel. I get that question a lot to be honest but never once have I thought of it as rude. I absolutely love to answer it with a heartfelt & robust "YES" because it's the darn truth!
