If you have lap RNY do they cath you or do you get up out of bed to pee? I'm just curious.. and each hospital probably has their own protocol on this. I'm having surgery @ Abbott if anyone has feedback on their stay. Just wondering what to expect.

Ah, I didn't think of this to be honest.  When I had my gallbladder out they didn't cath me (or I don't remember it at all) but I had to get out of bed and pee.  I drained 1.5 IV bags before I had to go and I swear it was the longest pee ever! LOL!

I just had my RNY last Wednesday at Unity.  They did cath me during surgery, but it was removed before I woke up.  My bladder didn't want to wake up so I had a straight cath twice, but once I got into the shower my bladder work up. HELLO...
It's nothing to worry about.

When I got to pre-op, I was told that I would not need a cath since I was under 300 lbs.  Then right before going in, another person told me that I would have a cath.  When I asked why since I was not over 300 lbs. she stated they like to if the procedure is 2 hours or more and not to worry because it would be taken out while I was still asleep.  But, when I got to my room, the nurse told me that it was time to take my cath out and I thought, "What?!  I have one?!"

I had one and didn't even know it!  So, obviously it wasn't so traumatic!

Was a little disturbed that everyone wasn't on the same page, but no biggie!

Stacy,
I had had the same surgeon as you and I wasn't cathed.

You have to get up out of bed to pee!  It's so annoying because a nurse/assistant has to come in every time to unhook you from stuff!

I can do this, I can do this, I can do this - AND SO CAN YOU!!

Unpleasant as it is mentally, it's really not a big deal - ESPECIALLY if they remove it before you're out of recovery.

Just think of it as another step to this whole life-giving procedure.  Whatever it takes, right?
