What do you do when your family doctor is against WLS?

Maybe have a discussion with your doctor about the program that you're looking at, the criteria, prep, etc.  Does the doctor have specific reasons for being against it?

I can do this, I can do this, I can do this - AND SO CAN YOU!!

I seen him today to have my yearly done and we talked about it for like half hr and he is just so against!
He said that even if my weight was 320 he still is against it.
He told me today that he has seen so may people come to him with problems with WLS. so we argued about that. Have to family members who have had the Gastric and one who just did the lapband. none who have problems and then my mother in law had it 6 yrs ago and the only problem she has is low iron so she takes iron. plus i have 3 friends who have had it and they have no problems.....ug i guess i am just fustrated with him! I have a form that he needs to fill out but he wouldnt! so i called park nicollet and they said once i get my paper work all done and sent in then i meet with a nurse and they will decide if it is approvable.
sorry about my spelling! lol
Thanks Tennille

Let me just say, this guy bothers me already. My only suggestion would be to look into finding another family doctor. If he has legitimate concerns for nixing the surgery, that's one thing-- did he talk to you about his concerns, or was it simply his personal opinion on WLS?

The point of having a general care physician is to keep you healthy-- if his own beliefs and biases interfere with this, it totally defeats the purpose.

Good luck, we're all rooting for you!
Katie

ok I just seen him for the first time today cause I am from south dakota and have not seen a dr here in hutchinson mn before so i picked him! big mistake!
When i told him that I am taking the steps I need to get the WLS he started saying he does belieave or support the WLS and I told him that is personal opinion and he said no that is his prefessional opinion! I just laughed and said whatever i guess thats still just your opinion.

The only thing he said about it is that he has only seen the bad out comes.
I am not going back to him I did not like him at all now I just need to find a doctor here in hutchinson that does support it cause when I do get the WLS it would be nice to have someone who cares!

When I was in south dakota I looked into the WLS but my insurance did not cover it even though my doctor is the one who brought it up. Now I live in mn and we just got real good insurance with medica and they cover it that is why I am taking the journey very serious! I want this like it was yesterday! lol
I just feel today was a big waste of time except that i did get my pshyical that I needed for the WLS.
Thank you
Tennille

I'd go seek another opinion and get a different doctor... Find a doctor who supports you if WLS is what you want to do. Its your health, your decision, find a doc who supports you!!!

There are people inside and outside the medical community who will always be against WLS.  If you have done enough research that you believe it is YOUR answer to fight obesity, then you should seriously consider finding a new PCP.

Mine was the person who gently suggested that I think about it, when I was pretty dead-set against ever going through another surgery!  I figured the next time anyone cut me open, it would be for an autopsy.  But then I started thinking....  At this rate, that could be sooner than you like!   There ARE risks and complications.  But with obesity, the odds of having really serious co-morbidities is much greater.  Do what you have to for YOU.

Find a new one.  Seriously!

Maybe your WLS program could recommend someone to you???

good luck

I just hate the Hutch clinic.  Is doctoring in Glencoe an option for you?  I see a PA and a doctor at the Glencoe clinic and they are so great and supportive of my decision to have surgery.  My doctor did a surgical rotation w/ Dr. Jones at PNC.  Let me know if you would like their names.
