6 month surgeon appt today

So today I had my 6 month appointment with Dr. Leslie.  He's happy with my progress but seemed hellbent on putting the fear of god into me.

I'm just wondering if lots of surgeons do this around this point. I suppose this is sometimes the point where things start to get hard again. He told me that an extra 100 to 200 calories a day would result in gaining back 100 lbs in 10 years.  And he went over all the things I shouldn't do. He even suggested I read and follow the eating restrictions for people with bands because that will help as well. He told me the stuff I shouldn't eat. Basically liquid calories and anything that comes in a foil-lined bag.

I'm sure it's his talk he gives to everyone but darn, I was already nervous about doing the right stuff as time goes on.

He is anti-protein shakes after 2 months but I did tell him that they are my only way to get enough protein and if/when I can get enough protein through food, I will cut back or stop them. Amazingly, I didn't get a lecture on it, since the dietitians had told me he was very against them.  I'm guessing if I hadn't lost as much as I have, he might have been a bit more stern after getting that news.

But all in all, I'm doing well.  The nurse even said "you don't even look chunky." I'm not sure I've heard anyone use that term since my mom died!

Anna,

129 pounds in 6 months is fabulous.......

I'm sure your Doctor just wants the best for you.......

Once I got to 9 months out I basically have maintained since then......So loose what you want to NOW......I'm 17 months out. My calorie intake is probably too much, I'm guessing I'm around 1400-1500 calories.....My NUT only wanted me eating 1,000 calories. That lasted till 1 year out......My hunger has come back, my portion size has increased, I'm a little scared.....I've started to log everything I eat again, and I try to have 1 protein shake a day......

Keep doing what your doing.....Your doing awesome.....

Kelly

I'm down a total of 129 whi*****ludes pre-op weight loss.  So I've lost about 110 since surgery (I know, not a huge difference but I wanted to be clear.)

My nut and surgeon won't give me a calorie range at all. Only, don't eat more than 1/4 cup of food per 15 minutes.

Doesn't the "average" woman need 1200 calories just to live?

Thanks for sharing your insight! And I'm relieved to hear that I'm not the only one who gets scared about making this work.

Kelly - you also need to consider how many calories you BURN when you exercise, because I know you exercise.  Don't forget that sweetpea!

Not only that, but your pouch has probably stretched a little, too, so you can fit more in. Not sure, but just guessing.

Hey Anna! Well, I think Dr. Leslie is amazing because he has the insight to point this out early to his patients!!!

I just read a post from an OH'er (different board) who attended an OH conference and had quite the conversation with a surgeon that was in attendence. The thing I took out of it the most was that he can't control his patients and it's frustrating for him that the majority don't comply.

And we all know these are the one's who go back seeking a revision 'cuz they broke what shouldn't have been broken in the first place. (*Edited to add: exception is of course, those that have medical reason for a revision such as a failed original surgery, staple line issue, etc. - I figured that went without saying, but just in case...I wanted to make it clear that I was not speaking of those patients.)

So, I give kudos to Dr. Leslie for telling you like it is now. Perhaps, you'll be one of his patients that complies!

Dr. Leslie actually called me a "zealot" at my 3 month appt, which he said he meant "in a good way."

I imagine that it's very easy to get into bad habits by the time you are at my stage, with no hunger and the weight disappearing almost every day.

You're right...I didn't think about that being really great that he is reinforcing all of this at time when things are still going well.  And it definitely is spurring me to re-evaluate what I'm doing and make sure I'm learning good habits now.

And I really loved the foil bag advice.  I was a chip person and know I need to avoid them because I could eat a whole bag in one sitting (not since the surgery though). Sometimes I'm tempting by the lowfat chips but then I remember I got fat eating those too.  Better for me to have a blanket rule (though yes, I know that isn't what everyone needs to do).

(P.S. you are looking fabulous!)
