Surgery was 10/5...a few questions

Well, I survived! I had RNY on Monday, came home Wednesday. I feel pretty decent but I am having much difficulty getting in liquids! How much did you all consume those first few days? When were you able to resume shakes? I tried on Wed. got in about 2 oz and felt horrid for hours afterward. I didn't try yesterday but I think I will try again today. I'm going to thin it out though and see if that helps.

Anyone have any suggestions for getting in water? I tried adding a bit of crystal light but I had even more trouble getting in the water so I'm back to straigh****er again. I thought I was so prepared and now I feel so lost! Any suggestions or ideas would be very helpful.

Blessings,
Shannon

I too am on the same exact schedual as you..surgery monday , home wednesday. Am having trouble because of swelling. I'm just taking it a sip at a time with no set amount. As time goes im sure it will get better for us. Just a sip at a time here and there. Keep trying to move a little bit as it will help with the swelling too. Hang in there , we will get over this lil blip and be well on a way in a few days!

It was very hard for me to get my water in also, seemed like I could get in 48oz. and that was it.....I ended up having a timer set for every 3-5 minutes, to remind me to drink.....That did help....

I couldn't do shakes till I could get my water in....So a few weeks later.....I had mostly chicken broth and yogurt.....

Remember, SF popscicles count towards water intake, I believe 2oz.

Good luck, and keep plugging along....

Hi Shannon!  Welcome to the the Losers Bench!

It's totally normal to struggle getting your liquids in... you're not going to reach your protein goals right away either...

Sip sip sip... thats what I did.. teeny tiny sips... You'll figure it out after a few days.. you figure out how much of a sip you can take and how many sips. And you're right.. about 2oz of protein shake or water is all your'e going to get in.. so if you make yourself a protein shake do the same thing.. sip sip sip... but its going to take you awhile to get it down. Your pouch is only the size of your thumb post op remember, so thats all the liquid that will go in at one time!

I couldn't do crystal light post op either. I relied on straigh****er, milk, or sugar free popsicles.

I know exactly what you're talking about when y ou say you were prepared and now you're feeling lost.. thats normal too!  Key is sip sip sip all day long... don't try to gulp anything down fast or too much (believe me, if it hasn't yet, you will figure that out pretty fast when it comes back up on ya!)
Take your time to get liquids in.  I ate about a million of those sugar free popsicles.  If you have a super walmart by you (the only place I know that sells them) go get the Crystal Light sugar free popsicles. The cherry pomegranate ones are the bomb!

One other suggestion - do a little experimenting with the temperature of the liquids you're sipping.  Some people prefer cold, some prefer hot, some like room temp.  Your pouch will tell you which it prefers - go with that!

And Patience is a virtue...   you'll get there, a little at a time.  Just don't push yourself too hard, you're healing!

Hi Shannon, Congrats on making it to the loser's bench.  Sip frequently, everyone else has offered good ideas.  If you have the TV on, take a sip with every commercial, the liquids will get easier as time passes.  You are on the right track.  Just continue to follow the plan and sip, walk, rest.  Hugs, Kathy

I ate alot of sugar free popsicles! Like Kelly said, they count as liquid intake too!

I just left tiny little glasses of water all over the house, and tried to sip all day long!
