Hair loss question

I'm almost 5 months post-op from RNY.  I weigh 195 right now which is 85 pounds less than what I weighed back in January (63 less than day of surgery).

Anyway, my hair is falling out.  I didn't think it would be as annoying/sad as it is.  At first it wasn't noticable but it's really thinning at my temples which makes me want to never wear my hair up AGAIN.

How long does the hair loss phase last?  Does it ever end or slow down?  Is there a general time frame in which the slow down or ceasing of loss occurs?  Also, other than increasing my protein intake, is there anything I can do or take to slow it down?  Any advice would be gleefully accepted.

I know I haven't been around much.  I joined a gym in August but the last 2 1/2 weeks I haven't been able to go because I've been too tired.  A coworker quit 2 weeks ago and we've already been short staffed so I volunteered to work extra hours - 7am to 6pm with a 1 hour lunch.  The 10 hour days really wore me down and I've felt ill the past week or so.  I stayed home much of Monday and all of yesterday with sore body.  I slept most of the time.  I'm feeling a ton better now and have some shortened hours.

I'm under 200 which is awesome.  I weighed 190 pounds when I was 17 so I'm incredibly happy with my loss so far.  My next doctor visit is November 20th and I'm hoping to be down to or close to 180 - or at least below 190.  I can wear size 16 jeans but mostly size 18 dress pants.  I'm able to wear Large size shirts.  My husband and I went through my closet and have pulled THREE garbage bags full of clothes that do not fit me.  It's ridiculous!!

Thanks for letting me ramble - it's been a while!

The hair thing is a little different for everybody.  Some people don't experience a great deal of hair loss, some come away from it feeling darn near BALD.  Most people experience re-growth, some don't.

I lost hair - not as bad as I feared, but it definitely got thinner (and it was pretty thin already from my thyroid issues).  I use Biotin - a vitamin supplement - 5000 mcg/day.  I DO believe it has helped.  I also use Nioxin hair products.  A bit spendy, but worth it.

(And when my hair grew back, it came in rather curly!  Used to want curly hair.  Now I have it & find myself trying to tame it down.  Are we ever happy???   )

Mine's thinned out too... but I think its slowed down.. i'm not noticing as much after i put Redken Hair Plump in my hair before blowdrying.. I also use the Nioxin shampoo... when I was putting the hair plump in before, i was getting alot of hair stuck to my hands after applying it.. now it seems less... so i'm hoping I'm on the upswing.

I'm just making sure I'm pushing my limit on protein intake and keeping up on things.
I am going to pick up some Biotin and see if that helps from Darla's suggestion...

I started taking Biotin at the suggestion of my bariatric nurse and have noticed it is helping.  I have used Nioxin products in the past for hair loss w/ good results.

Last night at PNC, the question of whether or not Biotin actually helps came up again.  A lot of people don't think it does, and the truth is - maybe it DOESN'T help everyone!

But I know that when I was struggling with my thyroid issues, I lost the majority of my upper eyelashes.  THAT was a hard one to swallow.  But since I've upped my Biotin to the 5000 mcg capsules, my lashes have grown back in quite nicely.

Is that thanks to the Biotin, or maybe some other WLS-related change in my body chemistry?

I'm not going to stop taking it to find out...
