Topic: Traditional Native food diet.....
What do you think of the traditional diet of meat, vegetables, fruits that our elders followed before the introduction of white......white flour...rice...sugar? I think we all agree that these have been killing our people off since they were introduced. Is it realistic to try to think we can follow that now? What are your thoughts and opinions?

Topic: What are your goals and plans for the new year?
Interested to know what everyone is thinking in terms of weight loss programs or powwows.....etc. Me I'm looking forward to being on this new journey of weight loss. I'm planning on going to more powwows this year because I didn't get to make too many last year because of not being able to get around to well because of knees and back hurting so much. I am planning on going to Oglala Nation this year for sure.....prob Iowa City. Bout the only plans I can think of right now.......expect our regulars.... Wisconsin and Chicago ones.

I guess it really depends on the type of surgery you have. I had lap band so I can only speak for that...... I'm not planning on giving up fry bread........I just won't have as much of it or maybe as often. NO way could I give it up forever!! No indin tacos????

I agree........I also know on the other boards if they post something not having to do with WL they put OT for off topic and nothing is said about that. I say we run with it until we know different!

I'm so glad that a few of us are starting to find this section. I agree.........we NEED to tell our fellow natives that there is a way that can help. Most (like my self till march of 2004 ) have never even heard of this. As you can see I have just had my lap band surgery. I had it on the 14th of Dec. When I went back for my two weeks visit the doc told me I lost 29lbs. since the day before surgery and 39 total! I could not do that on my own so I am singing the praises for this surgery. My knees are feeling so much better as well as my back. I was fortunate not to have diabetes........but I do have hypoglycemia which as most of us know can be a pre cursor. I hope we can keep this board up and let other natives know they are not alone and there IS HOPE!! Where is your family from Curtis?

Diane, that is fantastic about your diabetes being cured!!! I'm no doctor but just reading the messages posted on all the various boards and the main board, I would venture to say almost 100% are cured from it..now finally the media is reporting that this surgery should be the first line of defense, not the last. They are figuring out that short term diets do more harm than good, that people lose the weight but gain it back plus some so they are worse off than before. People who have had the surgery keep it off. This is my first time on the board--my maternal grandfather was half Comanche, my paternal grandfather half Sabine. Unfortunately, I cannot "legally" prove it, but I know what I am in my heart and that is all that matters. I do know that I can really tell a difference in my daily well being when I don't eat so many carbs now, almost like a lightness in my body. The days when I do eat more carbs than I should, I feel almost drugged. I was fortunate in the fact that I was diabetic before surgery but it was just a matter of time, I like to say I was a "healthy fat person" but we all know there is no such animal! Blessing to all for a most prosperous and healthy New Year! Monica

I am here now also, I just read the reply from Diane Hawk and I agree. I had my surgery on 10/21/2004 and it has been nine weeks, I am down 80 pounds, and feeling better. I am Cherokee, and was on 160 units of Insulin per day untill I had my surgery. I was in the Hospital for four days and when I got out the Dr took me off of insulin and put me on pills. I took them for a week and that was it. Now I am not taking anything at all. The only thing that I take in pill form is Vitamins and calcium tablets. I hope that more Native Americans would listen to you Dianne because this surgery came for me just in time. Most of the health problems that I had are correcting themselves, I had gotten to where I couldn't walk for long periods of times, nor could I do the things that I enjoyed doing. Now I have more energy and stamina and feel younger than I have in years. I also agree with Diane Thank God for this wonderful technology that is giving us our lives back

I am new to the group howewver since this is a message board for Native Americans, and also for discussing or experiences with Obesity, Pre Op and Post Op surgeries, and other factors, it would seem to me that we post personal issues and WLS issues. Culture and issues that surround our everyday lives, and the environment that we live in has a great impact on who and what we are. There are more Native Americans now in the United States that are facing problems with Obesity, and Diabetes, due to the way that our cultures and lives have changed, and so have the diets of many of us. Native Americans have more problems absorbing the Carbohydrates that are added to the foods that are available to us, I am glad that this site has given us a section for our discussions. I am looking forward in hearing from you all

Topic: RE: Hello
Hello Diane, thank you for replying. I'm Navajo, Piaute and Irish from Ft. Defiance Arizona. I have been wanting to talk with someone who has had this surgery also. I do really want this. I'm such a mess, physically, my knees are hurting right now. I feel like I'm 60 and not 40. I am Diabetic also. I want to feel good again. No, IHS will not help pay for this surgery, I dont think. I do have private insurance which will help me. And I do agree with you that hopefully one day IHS will see this as a way to help our Indian people with all this Diabeties all everything that comes along with it. I am soo amazed at how much people have changed after their WLS. How did you feel postop? Did you have very many complications during surgery? What type of WLS did you have? How many days were you out before returing to work? What types of food did you eat after your WLS? As you can see I have soo many questions? I'm hoping I can talk with you and anyone else to give all this info. I hope to be hearing from you........thank you Carmen
