How do you deal with what family can eat and what you can eat?
My husband says he doesnt mind cooking but cant do it everyday. I understand that and I told him as long as Im cooking healthy foods Im fine. Also everyone needs to be eating healthy anyway. I think this should be a good change for everyone but these issues are getting to me so I would just like to see how everyone else deals with these issues. I have two small children at home and they are very picky. Some nights all I can get them to eat is cereal. So this is going to be big challenge.
I feel like I'll be tempted too by the unhealthy food so what we've all decided to do is to create weekly menus: Monday-Salad Night, Tuesday-Sandwich Night, Wednesday-Ground Meat Night (hamburgers, meatloaf-things I'll be able to have), Thursday-Breakfast for Dinner (eggs for me), Fridays-BBQ (chicken breasts for me)...Saturdays and Sundays my husband will cook for the family whatever they all want. I have a 9 month old, who still eats baby food. I also have a 4 year old who is very picky, but will eat some kind of sandwich, hamburgers, chicken...He wrecks our salad night, but most nights are ok.
Hope that helps...Michele

I am very lucky in that regard as my son is 18 yrs old and goes away to college. When he has been home this summer, he knows that if he wants something he can cook it. My husband works weird hours so he basically does his own thing. On the weekends, we usually eat out and we agree on what to order and i eat off his plate or just order a salad with grilled chicken. If he decides to go fast food, I get a small chili from Wendys.
With both of you having small children, this is your opportunity to train them to eat nutritious food so they won't have problems with obesity like we do. I did that with my son and while he is a picky eater, he is very health conscious. He didn't like to many veggies but loved baby carrots (still does) and fruits. If your kids get hungry enough, they will eventually start trying new foods....that is the difficult part as we feel like they will starve. You may want to see a pediatric nutritionist to help you with this as it is probably the best gift you can give your child. I used to give my kid fruit flavored yogurt and he always thought it was pudding and dessert...lol.
Take care and good luck! Pam
In the beginning, my DH was a real trooper and truly handled all of the meals. I now do the majority of the cooking. I have switched to a healthier, leaner way of cooking. I have become a real fan of "Cooking Light" and "Devin Alexander" from Discovery Health. I use a lot of recipes to rework old favorites to make them healthier and better for me and them, but they/we are eating a lot of things that are 'familiar.'
I lead with lean protien, I make sure that we have plenty of complex carbs and I only make some of the simple carbs. I also really try to limit them to things that aren't my favorites if I have trouble staying out of them.
Wishing you success as you move forward,
Barb
