OT: Why am I STILL awake? (for all you animal lovers)

Because I was wakened by a phone call and got out to rescue a baby kitten during the middle of the night tonight, that's why!!!

My softie of a hubby even went with me and held her, screaming like a banshee, while I went into the 24 hour grocery store to buy homemade formula supplies.  When I got back out to the car, he was holding her so sweet and raised his finger to say SHHH!  As soon as I shut the car door, she was back to screaming, poor thing!

We've done 3 cc's of formula from a syringe.  I am guessing she is about 3 weeks old.  Precious and healthy little calico baby girl.  She is laying in the dog bed with Madeline here next to me all cuddled up together like Maddie is her protective mama.  Sooo cute!!!

I'll be back at the vet's in the morning for real replacement formula and a bottle.  We've been wanting another kittie so badly.  I guess now we have one!

I better try to get some shut-eye before the next feeding.  Wish us luck!

After about 3-4 hours sleep, I took the little one to the vet this morning.  She was a sticky mess from all the syringe feeding last night.  I swear half goes in, half goes all over her!

The vet's staff was just awesome in getting this baby girl started and charged me nothing!  (I'd just spent $135 yesterday on Maddie and they joked that with all the upcoming kitty visits, I will more than pay for today!  ha!)  They administered a tiny amount of Advantage (for fleas), a bit of wormer, gave me a bottle, and sent me to the grocery for goat's milk.  She IS about 3 weeks and has to be fed every 2 hours.  So far she hates the bottle but I don't think she is hungry enough to give it a good go yet, just a sleepy girl after all the excitement last night.

Maddie has taking over as foster mommy.  Since she never had a litter of puppies so I'm amazed at her nurturing nature.

BTW, I have chosen to name the kitten Vivienne and we are calling her Viv and Vivie.

If you've read about our adventure, thanks for letting me share it with you!  Here's a photo of my tuckered girls.  (Viv reminds us a bit of Guinivere, our beloved kitty that we lost last year after a battle with an unknown illness.)

I'm so glad you enjoyed my story and the photo.  I will post more photos.  I need to get a good shot of her face.  She has the most precious face ever and the sweetest little white mitten paws.  Give your big guy a smooch for me, will ya?!  Muuuwhaaa!!!

What a WONDERFUL story!  And a precious photo!  I am so glad that you have found each other!  And I am glad that your vet recommended goat milk!  It's the best neonate formula!  I was a vet tech and a dog breeder for a LONG time and also raised dairy goats for over 10 years, so have had experience with all the above,  lol.  Keep plugging away with the formula and she will catch on!  And do keep us posted!

Suzanne, I feel so lucky.  We are just thrilled to pieces.  We've honestly grieved not having a kitty around and it's been hard waiting until we felt the time was perfect.  Now that burden has been taken from us, without any planning on our part!

I love hearing about your experiences and love for animals.  We would be best buds for sure!  Our vet is wonderful in that he and his techs are all big advocates and volunteers for the animals and their various charities in our community.  One of the things I'm looking most forward to about losing this weight is the possibility to be more involved with animals, hopefully volunteering to work and foster for some local rescues.

Today has been a bit worrying about how she is doing with the formula.  I just don't know that she is taking in enough and it seems easier to use a syringe rather than the bottle.  She does sleep a good solid 3+ hours between feedings and has that strong cry so she must be doing okay?  I will be so glad when she is able to EAT!  Any advice at all about raising this baby girl, I'm all ears!

Yay!  I'm glad you think so, Ann!  I definitely think having both dogs and cats is such a great idea.  They can be the bestest buddies, that's for sure!

Can you believe I found Maddie allowing the kitten to nurse her this morning?  She looked up at me with this sad pouty face like she wasn't too sure about what was going on.  lol  I swear she is the sweetest dog ever.

I am babysitting my little granddaughter chihuahua tonight and found out today that she may be a permanant fixture of our household soon since daughter may be moving back home.  She is still just 2 lbs. (14 weeks old) and is such a prissy little thing!  "Nana" wants to go buy her a sweater because she is already shivering with the cooler temps.

Is your clan of fur-babies glad to have their mama back?!
