HI Cindy,
When I first started, I was supposed to take 2 ounces of my protien supplement at the top of every hour that I was awake and then at least 6 ounces of water or crystal lite during the balance of the hour, this allowed me to get in the fluid requirements. I'm not sure if your RN told you, but the most common reason that people are re-admitted to the hospital is dehydration, so it's REALLY important that you get in as much fluid as possible. You want to do as much as you can to get in the protien so that your body will have the protien it needs to repair ... and you really need it since you've been fighting infections on top of it.
I hope that helps some.

My friend left this morning so she's not here to be on my case every little minute to get everything in which she couldn't understand I just couldn't. The nurse told me yesterday that it would take 3 months for the inside to heal, have you heard that?

Hi Cindy,
There is definitely a learning curve and you have had some additional challenges to deal with as you are learning how to work with this new pouch. It takes time for the swelling to go down. As it does, it will be easier and easier to get in the volume that you'll need. Keep working on it. I honestly found that I consumed more when I used crystal lite instead of just sipping water. I'm not sure why, but it really seemed to help.
Since you don't have your friend there to 'push' you to get in the fluids and protien that you need consume, you might want to use an a alarm or something like that to ensure that you keep sipping away. It's easy for time to get away from you when you aren't feeling like consuming anything.
I certainly would heed your nurse's advise regarding healing after surgery. Many people are ready to go back to work within 3 to 4 weeks, some sooner. But that doesn't mean you would be fully healed by then. I think that I was feeling much better by 4 weeks, as a matter of a fact I attended a wedding and dance for hours and while I still tired easily I was doing much better. By the time I was 7 to 8 weeks post op I was able to drive down the beach and walk for hours, I still tired more easily, but was much better. By the time I was 3 months post op I don't recall any residual fatigue.
I wish you continued success,
Barb
