Amber,

I think my response may be being misunderstood. I meant to say that I think it's okay to color your hair. You might want to use a semi permenant dye if you are worried about breakage. Bleaching might lead to breakage and so you would want to be careful, but your hair won't be more fragile after surgery. The issue is that you may well suffer some loss post op that will start at about 3 months post op and will likely last for 2 or 3 months, so you may not to risk breakage that might contribute to the overall 'thinning' that would occur. On the other hand, the coated, colored hairshafts tend to make you hair look fuller and give more body, so as long as you are careful and use a gentle product, if coloring your hair makes you feel good about yourself, go for it.

Barb,  I think I personally have both factors to factor in.  I know that coloring my hair makes it fall out by the root more than normal.  I lose it by the handfuls in the shower after coloring.  But, you are right in that it does make my hair look thicker and fuller.  I guess the jury's still out on this one for me!

Shauna,

Look very closely at the hairs that fall out after you color and see if you can see the hair folicle. If you do, then it's not breakage or related to the coloring, it's just that the hair in question was ready to come out anyway ... we lose about 150 to 200 strands a day when all is well and healthy. If you can't see the folicle, it means that you have lost the hair due to breakage and there might be an issue with the color. If you stay away from amonia based colors, then you are likely to find a very gentle product that isn't likely to cause breakage ...

My friend is an experience colorist and shared this information with me.

Amber had no clue she'd open such a lively discussion, did she?!  lol

When I was coloring my hair (both at home and with a professional colorist), I would lose it by the handfulls, especially in the shower.  When I say handfulls, I am talking entangled mess of hand FULLS.  It was horrible.  I went from barely being able to stretch a ponytail holder over my hair a second time to easily getting it around a third time.  That's only after I began coloring my hair, and even after custom-mixing the levels so they'd be more gentler.  Once I stopped coloring, the hair loss has stopped for me (other than the natural, normal amount I lose each day).  My hair is much healthier now.  I wonder why I would trade this to look "younger," but vanity seems to still get the best of me at times!  ;)  Still contemplating!...

I've been coloring my own hair all along and have had no problems.  My hair did thin some but I don't think the coloring had any impact on it.... just the normal hair loss most of us WLS folks have.

Go for it!  Alice

As the resident soon to be sexy older gray haired man on this board it seems that now that Im about three months approaching.. sheesh Im shedding like a sheepdog. Since I dont have short hair its sorta wierd that my thinning out top is gonna make me have to go get it cut one of these days if I wind up looking like I was taking chemo. I tried the spray on hair but it just never looked just right and honestly Black was not my color either. Who ever invented that stuff was scamming us men bad. I then started rubbing Rogaine up there and naturally the hair on my head did nothing but I have gorilla hairy hands now.. What we men do to get ourselves so primped up and looking good. Ok girls I had to pick on yall just a tiny bit cause this was a great topic. But my question is how much to you loose in the sheeding process. I have real thick hair but it is looking sorta lonesome up there now.. My head is too big for a hat and bald is not really in my cards either as well as a toupee. Any ideas?

"Gorilla hairy hands!"

Here's my suggestion below.  Ah, be still my heart.

Btw, I've been trying to convince Jason, from the forum, to shave his head.    Right now he's using the cold weather as an excuse.  Pfffttt!!!

If I shaved my ol head the moon would go on vacation because it would glow in the dark and considering its size illuminate Western North Carolina with no problem.. i think Ill keep the hair long for a while. My wife threatens me with divorce if I tell her im going to cut it all off.. the things we men do to make you girls happy out there.
