Anyone else upset with Contestant Bob from the Biggest Loser?
I have watched the Biggest Loser since it's inception. While I know that eating healthy and exercising is their day-to-day existence, aiding in their on-campuses success, I've still been inspired by their dedication to work hard at achieving their goals. Last night was the first time I've gotten upset by one of the contestants. For those of you who haven't been watching this latest season, let me catch you up. They have a male contestant who 13yrs ago had WLS. At the start of the show they showed that his pouch was still relatively small but his starting weight on the show was 420lbs. Last night during one of the many individual interviews they do with the contestants, he stated "13yrs ago I had RNY Exclusion surgery. I tried to take the easy way out". WHAT?!?!?!? Did I just hear him say that? Did he call WLS the Easy Way Out?!?!? Yep he did!
How many of you think it was the easy way out? Not me! Do I regret my decision? Nope but was it the easy way? Nope! When so many people have that common misconception, to have someone that underwent the surgery, feed that lie infuriates me! Don't blame the surgery! If you don't pick up your hammer and the nail never gets pounded into the board, is it the hammers fault? My point is WLS is just a tool, like any other. You can use the tool to the full extent or you can eat around it.
Sorry guys, just had to vent

I just laughed at what he said. Obviously he went into the surgery thinking that it was going to be an easy fix. He was wrong and a fool to think that it was.
I think it shows more of the mind set towards bariatric surgery in the past--both on the part of doctors and patients.
But you're right he shouldn't feed the lie----and I love the hammer analogy---maybe someone should hit him with the hammer

I didn't see it, but heard about it from another WLS friend. You hit the nail on the head with that hammer girl! RNY is not the easy way out, it is a tool and we do have to work with our tool. I am over 6 years PO, have lost 217 lbs and re-gained 25 lbs, but I know it's totally my fault. That said, I am very pleased with my RNY and know it still works if I would just let it. I keep saying I have to get back on the ball and loose what I've gained, but I feel wonderful! Try not to let what he said get to you, he is probably regretting it already. I'm sure he's been slammed more than once since then.
Take care, vent anytime! Have a great rest of the week!

Hey there!
The "easy way out" comment is something that really gets under my skin also. Putting the whole "IS it the easy way" question aside...who gives a darn if it was?! Let's just say, for the sake of argument, that it is, in fact, the "easy" way out. Does it matter how I got where I am as long as I didn't hurt anyone getting there? Am I less deserving of health and happiness because of my route of travel getting there? I'm all for better living through science. I equate the "easy way out" comments to the folks who get sick as a dog and won't seek medical attention (barring financial reasons) because they're gonna "tough it out".
Let's say you and I live side by side in nearly identical houses. They both need painting so you go out and buy several gallons of paint and a few paint brushes. You spend several days painting by hand and finish. You stand back and admire your beautiful house. I go out and buy a paint sprayer. I spend two hours spraying my house and step back and admire my paint job. Does it matter to those who pass by and see two freshly painted houses "how" they got painted or is it only important that they BOTH look great and are now assets to the community?
Don't let it bother you. Just enjoy what you have and know there are many who wish they could have what you (and I) have.

I have to admit I agree with you. RNY is not the easy way out, it is just a way out. You still have to get on the path and follow that way to the end results of a smaller person.

I don't think it is the "easy" way out either. But I have heard that a lot ~ mostly from people who have no idea what it feels like to live life being obese. I usually just try to shrug it off when someone says that because sometimes ya just can't fix stupid, ya know???
I didn't see the show, but am thinking maybe he said that to give himself an excuse as to why he regained??

I agree with everybody here-it is not the easy way out--for me it was the only way-after years of yo-yo dieting and then developing diabetes and no amount of exercise and eating heathy helped me--my diabetes medicine was making me gain weight and then when exercising my sugar would drop and then eating 1/4 of a banana would make it go sky high-it was an endless cycle. I read about people gaining their weight back and more and then getting upset because their insurance companies will not pay for a revision and then their next sentence is that they started drinking soda again and drinking while eating and stopped exercising-they fogotten that this is a tool and if you do not follow the rules and stick to them yes you can gain it back. That is why I am so grateful for the support groups and the people on here-it just makes you stay on track. I loce the biggest loser and have watched it every year-it really sucks to hear someone say that and then the show put WLS in a bad light--you knew going in that you have to change your life and stay that way-just keep following the rules and stay oin track-because it is like weigh****chers always have said--nothing taste as good as being thin feels and I have to agree-being healthier and having more energy is worth all the pain that was involved with the surgery and I would do it all over again!!
