Lisa - I'm a crocheter from way back - my grandmother taught me when I was a kid. Can't stand to be without my yarn! I took a couple of knitting classes at a local yarn shop, and had so much fun! There's even a way to knit socks using a method called magic loop that uses cable needles. Really works once you knit a couple of rows to get the hang of it.
If you'd like to try a very easy pattern for a baby blanket, buy a copy of Debbie Macomber's novel 'The Shop on Blossom Street'. She has a pattern in the front of the book that is the pattern she writes about in the story. I made it for my niece when she was pregnant with her daughter. It goes very quick (the story AND the knitting!).
Good luck! Oh - there's a second book also - Another Good Yarn. Also a very good read and has a pattern for socks!
