Topic: RE: Why did you pick your type of surgery?

I had a lapband put in dec 2002.  lost about 70 pounds with it, never made it to goal of 150 pounds.  Had so many issues of food getting stuck no matter how much I chewed.  The foaming, the sliming, the handing over the toilet hoping to get unstuck.... the pain in the chest.  Weight started coming back on.  Started looking into a revision surgery, the DS and researched surgeons that specialize in revisions to DS.

Then pain in the abdominal area started, unexplained fevers and port area turning pink.  Had an endoscopy done, band had erroded into my stomach.  In dec 2009 I had to have the crap band removed and the stomach repaired.  Had to heal 2 ulcers as well, one at the band site, and one at the bottom of the stomach.

The reason I chose the DS is because I've had dieted most of my adult life.  Have lost the same 100 to 150 pounds 6 times over.  I can lose it through starvation/dieting and excessive excersizing, however, weight always creeps back on and then some.  I basically ruined my metabolism.  I wanted a surgery where I would have the use of my stomach, not a blind stomach, I wanted to be able to take NSAIDS if I needed to, I wanted to be able to be scoped if I medically needed it and not go in for surgery for that.  I didn't want to diet every again, I wanted to be able to eat all types of food if I wanted.  I NEVER wanted to experience a "dumping syndrome," which I've researched, can bring on heart palpitations.  I was already taking meds to control heart palpitations, I didn't want to have a procedure that could possibly make it worse.  The biggest part of my decision was I wanted a surgery that can give me the best odds to lose the most weight and keep it off.  The DS has the best odds long term.

Bariatric surgery is a personal decision.  If you've done your research, feel confident that the surgery you've chosen is the best for you, picked your sugeon,  then that's the most important.

Best wishes.

Donna

I had blbsnj number of years ago before wls they did cover my breast redeuction due to medical necceisties I had to have it shown by my dr that I had to have it, My drs took pictures of my breast because I had bisters and infections underneath them and NO Medication would work to clear them up. Now when I go to to the dr I have them write down the rashes I get from hanging skin and the mdication  they give me to clear it up. I now have Medicare so I don't know there requirements.
Good Luck

Good Morning!

One of my to do list items for 2011 is to research plastic surgery.  Did your Horizon NJ Blue Cross cover any portion?  I am aware that it is covered under reconstructive therefore certain
conditions must be met.

What was your experience?

Thanks in advance for any input,

PS
