Wow What a difference there has bee to this sight. When I joined there was nobody using it I had to go to another province to get advice. Congrats to you all of your various journeys. My Husband had the sleeve done almost a year ago. He has done fairly well has lost about 50lbs and has kept it off. Sorry to report there has not been much contact from the clinic. We were there twice and they have stopped calling. oh well their loss. Myself I have the lapband. I have had 2 bands in 6 years. Doing ok there has been hurtles but I feel great.
On another note this is to any one who has the band and requies an adjustment I am certified to do the lap band adjustments. You can call me 902-678-2533.  I know there are some doctors out there who are doing them but if they do not know the band. They can not help you when you need advice
about food choices and is it really a good time for a fill. Just keep that in mind.
As for the rest of you folk keep up the good work..

Topic: RE: Question regarding a surgeon
Hi there Nova Scotia doesn't do the lap band procedure. NB does. MSI covers the hospital stay and DR's appointments but you have to pay for the band. That can cost you about 4-6000 dollars. NB has a 2+ year waiting list.
If you can afford the band from ONT or QUE you can pick when you want it.  MSI will not cover the procedure because most of the doc's does their surgery in a clinic. But you can claim all of your expenses in your income tax.
I have the band and it was the best gift I could give to myself. I had mine done in Missisauga ON The Dr was Chris Colburn he is wonderful.
Hope this helps

Topic: RE: Is Lap Band surgery offered via Laparscopy in Nova Scotia, Canada?
Hi Autumn. NS does not offer the lap band procedure. New Brunswick has surgerons who do the surgery. The rest is in Onatrio and Quebec.
Nova Scotia and I mean MSI  will only cover the hopital time and DR's appointment, and you have to pay for the band. This is for New Brunswick. I am not sure if they do the band in Quebec in hospital or clinics. I know most of the bands are done in clinic's. Hospital are only use if there are big health  issues.
Aslo NB has a 2 year + waiting list. In Ont you pay out of your pocket so you have the freedom to choose when you want it done.
Hope this helps. I love my band. It was the best thing I ever gave myself

Topic: RE: Can I get your opinion on my situation?
Hi Mary,

First off, my heart goes out to you.  I feel your pain and frustration with wanting the help and not getting any answers.

I had a referral put in back in September for a checkup (I already had surgery in 1991), but needed perhaps a scope or something and that clinic wouldn't even look at my file.  Luckily I found my old surgeon and he's going to take care of me or I'd be up sh*t creek!

What I would suggest is to call them yourself, personally, I would call every week and keep on pushing the importance of not only how you want this surgery, but how you NEED it.  (As they say, the squeaky wheel gets the oil).

We have members at our support group that felt they had to leave the province to get a procedure done because they couldn't wait, but they had to self-pay.  I understand sometimes the wait time in New Brunswick is quicker if your doctor and MSI will agree to it (I've even heard of MSI partial paying for the surgery in other provinces).  This could be something you can look into.

All I know is we need to advocate in this province about WLS and not only adress the wait times, but the lack of support as well and fight to get more bariatric doctors working in this province with more OR time too!!!.

Best of luck and hope you get some answers real soon.

PS,....When I see my surgeon on Thursday (he's in Amherst), I am going to tell him about the long wait list and urgency of some people needing something done soon, to see what he says.  I'll let you know what he says.

Take care,
Coreena
