For the the nurses, did you feel that you received differential treatment as a patient because you were a nurse. I see it alot, I'm not sure its because I am a nurse or because of being a REALLY informed consumer. If you or someone you know have experienced this, let me know. I'm really curious, because we talked about it at work a few months back. I was a little surprised to hear some of the comments.

Topic: RE: RN Salaries?
Well I'm an associate degree nurse and Ive been a nurse 2 1/2 years and I made 57k last year. Most of my friends are nurses and the one that has an associates degree works in ICU and made 93K!!!! Our friend that has a BSN doesn't make anymore, she's just eligible for more management positions! Of course by going to a four year college her loans are almost 10x what I owed.

I lived in Washington Dc for many years and I was making 50.00 an hour. I moved 200 miles south and with 25 years experience I am making what I made in the early 80's-21.00 an hour. Sucks!!! I moved here for a better life, but the change in salary has been very upsetting. I may go to Travel this spring to make some money. Good Luck

Topic: RE: HOW TO DO IT WITH CHILDREN
I went through nursing school married, working full time, 3 kids..got pregnant 3 yrs after having my tubes tied..found out I was preg during my first yr of NS fall finals. Then I proceded to deliver #4 12 weeks early..and still made it through. I had huge support from family. I did all my prereq's 1-2 classes at a time so I had nothing left to do while I was in the program..just nursing classes. I think a lot of it has to do with what your out look on life is. I am a very " I can and I will " person if that makes since. It's all about how much you want it. I've been a labor and delivery nurse for 2 1/2 yrs now and it's the most fullfilling job I've ever had. I love it!!! Best of luck to you! Julie RNY 3-26-04 Dr. Aquirre, Ensenda Mexico 255/147/150

I would think any active infection would be a contraindication for surgery but hopefully by December it will be gone! Debbie

Topic: RE: How soo did you get back to work?
Erin- I work as a nursing supervisor and so walk approximately 5+miles/night. I had a laparascopic RNY and was back to work 1 week after surgery. Personally, I wouldn't recommend that, but bills had to be paid and so back to work I went! With an open RNY, I would be concerned with lifting, of course but also with pain control issues. I thought I was tough and had a high pain tolerance but found out this surgery was unlike any of the other abd surgeries I had previously been through. I also went back to work 1 week after an emergency abd hyst and that was easy compared to this (but I'm also 10 years older than I was then...LOL!) I think the bottom line is to use your judgement and follow what your surgeon feels is safe for you. Good Luck- debbie
